introduction to Rainforest conservation in Ecuador

Working with the Rain Forest Concern, you could help make a lasting difference to this beautiful cloud forest reserve. The Bosque Nublado Santa Lucia is a true, community-based conservation and eco-tourism effort, located in the mountain cloud forests of the Choco Andean bio region of north western Ecuador. You would be playing an essential role in sustaining and developing the conservation aims of Santa Lucia.

If you want to see the world, experience new cultures and give something back as you go, then volunteer travel is for you. Whatever your age and background, if you have a ‘can-do’ attitude and a desire to make a difference, there are a wealth of worthwhile projects that could do with your help, from conservation to community development, from teaching to tourism.

traveller reviews for Rainforest conservation in Ecuador

When, after climbing 600meters up a trail to the Santa Lucia lodge for the first time I finally reached the top and was hit with panoramic views across the Andes. A totally amazing view. The sunrises and sunsets were out of this world and the people were more friendly and welcoming than I ever expected.  (more)
volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference
This area is a global hotspot of diversity with over 1500 species of tropical plants and 300 species of bird, as well as a variety of exotic animals including the endangered spectacled bear.

What’s more, because you’ll be working with the Rainforest Concern, you’ll also receive a wealth of other benefits including:
- Membership of Rainforest Concern; ‘Protector’ status for those staying up to seven weeks; ‘Guardian’ membership for those who stay more than seven weeks.
- Each volunteer sponsors five acres of rainforest during their first two weeks of their stay.
- Each volunteer sponsors an additional acre of rainforest for each week they stay thereafter.

Each volunteer also receives:
- certificate to confirm their membership status and the number of acres they have sponsored in the Choco-Andean Rainforest Corridor.
- Rainforest Concern T-shirt.
- Thank you letter and other introductions.
- Latest and subsequent editions of our Rainforest Review magazine plus regular updates from the projects.

Santa Lucia was first formed as an agricultural cooperative and quickly learnt the value of conservation and sustainable management of its natural resources. This project presents a fantastic opportunity for you to play a role in its future.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
