the amazing things you'll be doing
This expedition to the wilderness of Patagonia proves that some of the most fascinating places on earth are the most difficult to get to.
Our first cold weather terrestrial expedition combines critical conservation projects with challenging exploratory trips to some of Patagonia’s most untouched and wildest areas. As an Expedition Member you will experience the sensation of truly being a biologist, while also making a positive impact to the conservation of a unique habitat. You will also have the opportunity to test your fitness on a 15 - 18 day trek over the Patagonia glaciers in the Andes.
After an intensive and comprehensive training period you will be involved in activities such as trekking in mountain regions, surveying populations of araucaria trees and studying the impact on introduced mammal species such as red deer and wild boar.
Save £250 on a 10 week Teaching English program in Thailand.
Gain a TEFL, teach English and work with local communities in the stunning province of Krabi . For a limited time, a 10 week expedition now costs only £1950

day-by-day itinerary
| Sample 5 week itinerary, depending on season, expedition date and wildlife movements | ||
| Day 1-9: | Upon arrival at base camp you will begin a comprehensive training program including Health and Safety, emergency medicine and evacuation procedures, operating communication equipment, maps and navigation techniques, camp living and cold weather survival. All expedition members will be introduced to our science projects and learn the survey techniques they will be using during the conservation/science phase of the expedition. | |
| Day 12-34: | After a short 2 night break, you will start preparing for phase 2 of your 6 week expedition, a 15-18 day trek. You will experience the Patagonian Andes with all their beauty, carrying all of your personal food, tents and climbing equipment – a very heavy pack! All your knowledge from the training period is put to the test now. | |
| Day 36-42: | After another short break between phases (beware, there might be a hot shower waiting for you) it is now time for some more conservation work on perhaps the elusive huina cat – the only carnivore endemic to the southern Andean forests. Being immersed in the beautiful Andean mountains whilst supporting a vital project is a rare opportunity whilst knowing that you are collecting valuable data used to help conserve this endangered cat species. | |
travellers' tales
The 'condoreras' where the condors roost are simply beautiful areas in themselves, and it was fascinating learning about the condor and contributing to important research being conducted by an Argentinean scientist. (more)
how this holiday makes a difference
|
Working in conjunction with local universities and various conservation bodies throughout Patagonia and South America, this expedition plays a key role in the development and management of long term wildlife and habitat research and conservation initiatives and the management of many protected areas.
Expedition members will have the opportunity to explore the extremes and wilderness of Patagonia and receive training whilst contributing to the long term sustainability of key programs such as these and many more. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
