the amazing things you'll be doing
A true connoisseur understands that quality outweighs quantity, and this 8-day east coast odyssey by rail is no exception. We only take in the places you want with plenty of options to suit your own preferences and without the need for compromises. This flexibility allows the best of the best where you can experience a true world city in Sydney, chill out with laidback locals in Byron Bay, absorb the natural beauty of northern New South Wales and discover the secrets of the Queensland capital. Your tour leader is an expert who can find you the best value experiences along the East Coast.
day-by-day itinerary
Days 1-3:Sydney. The East Coast adventure begins in vibrant harbourside Sydney. Mingle with locals at Bondi beach, hire a bicycle and ride across the Harbour Bridge or take a pub tour through the historic Rocks region. A day trip to the nearby Blue Mountains is also recommended and of course, no trip to Sydney is complete without a visit to the Sydney Opera House.
Days 4-6:Byron Bay. This traveller's paradise has something for everyone. For the active, try surfing, hike to the lighthouse that marks Australia's most eastern point or catch a band. For those looking for a more relaxed pace, hang out with the hippies and yuppies in art galleries or try to spot dolphins from the beach.
Days 7-8:Brisbane. A ferry trip along the Brisbane River is highly recommended. Be sure to jump off at the South Bank precinct to explore the weekend markets, gaze back at the city skyline or even take a dip at the man-made beach. The Regatta Hotel is a great place to hang out with they city's younger population or head to the expansive botanical gardens for a picnic in the heart of the city.

highly commended
This tourism business was Highly Commended in our 2007 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards - the largest awards of their kind in the world, and organised by responsibletravel.com in association with The Times, World Travel Market and Geographical Magazine, of the Royal Geographical Society.

Since 2004, the Awards has recognised individuals, companies and organisations in travel making a big commitment to the culture and economies of local communities and helping to conserve biodiversity.
how this holiday makes a difference
We have covered all the highlights, but it is how we go about it that makes this trip special. We use local transport in Sydney, eat in locally owned, run and flavoured establishments. Rather than travelling as a coach load of tourists, we get out of bikes, or get up on our feet, and explore the rainforest, the beach, lakes and sand dunes. There is no better way to preserve the scenery than canoe gently through the waterways.

We stay in locally owned accommodation, and take the time to experience a range of genuine Aussie lifestyles. There is plenty of time on this trip to enjoy the scenery with canoeing, surfing lessons, dolphin kayaking, and there is also time to enjoy the culture with local pub nights, yabby racing and much more.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
