the amazing things you'll be doing
Lofoten Islands classic sea kayak expedition
2009 departures: 7 Jun, 14 Jun
From Kr24750 (approx £2490) (7 days) ex flights

This classic sea kayak expedition is a “first class” journey which allows you to relax in the exceptional care and service of our well qualified guides. This trip journeys from Å to Svolvær where jagged peaks embedded in the sea and the sounds of the Moskenes maelstrom, one of the world’s strongest ocean currents tell Viking sagas and legends of the seafaring people. Where idyllic islands look out on the open sea and white sand beaches meet the grassy flatlands you can still hear the sound of fishermen rowing wooden boats.

It is amidst this dramatic, seemingly painted, backdrop of glacier carved granite that we’ll paddle into fishing villages and lodge in choice sea houses built on century old wharves. We take advantage of the 24 hour daylight and make open water crossings while waters are calm. Sea eagles, cormorants and pilot whales are frequently sighted while cultural interaction and mountain tours, round out the experience.

Note: Our classic inn to inn trips offer the highest standard of accommodation in the Lofoten with spacious double occupancy. Breakfasts and lunches are served by our well qualified guides; flavor-filled two-course dinners are prepared by local restaurants. Luggage transportation from rorbu to rorbu is included as well as all entries to cultural and historical attractions as outlined in the itinerary.

This sea kayak expedition is a magical journey on Norway’s Western Fjords. Cut out of steep granite mountains the fjords wind through the Sunnmøre Alps from the Atlantic coast to where the mountains finally block their path in Geiranger.

Beginning near Ålesund, Storfjord cuts deep into the mountains of Sunnmøre where it divides into the smaller more dynamic fjords of Norddalsfjord, Tafjord, Sunnylvsfjord and finally the majestic waterway of Geirangerfjord. In Geiranger the mountains block the sea from further penetrating Westward and the granite walls climb up 1500m to mark the gateway to the Jotunheimen Mountains. This is an area of raw natural beauty with snow capped mountains, towering granite walls, historic high mountain farms, flowering fruit trees, and quaint villages tucked into small protective bays.

Note: This is an outdoor camping expedition where you are an integral part of the team. Clients take part in all aspects of the trip, from camp set up through meal preparation and clean-up. Your knowledgeable, friendly guides will lead you on a discovery of Norway’s Western Fjords. Here you will experience the history and culture of a rugged mountain people and the waterways that connected them.

how this holiday makes a difference
Norway is one of the world’s richest countries due to large deposits of fossil fuels in the North Sea; its wealth and ever increasing demand for centralisation has threatened its historic seafaring coastal societies steeped in rich Norwegian culture and traditions. The Norwegian coastal communities rely on valued tourism income to offset the ever increasing depletion of traditional industries such as fishing. Our trips are consciously located in areas where your visit will help preserve the small coastal communities and assist in the continued survival of local coastal societies.

Through our local economic strategy we contribute to the ongoing financial development of these sensitive coastal regions by investing and supporting local communities through purchasing real-estate and establishing operational headquarters in the areas we travel. We purchase all food items locally to support local grocery stores and eateries, as well as prioritising local organic vegetables, fruits and meats. We also use locally owned and operated accommodation facilities such as hotels, inns, guest houses, bed & breakfasts, and campgrounds.

Our commitment to sensitive ecosystems and the conservation of the environment is paramount in all our actions. We put the environment first. We kayak and hike because it is quiet and clean. Through self power we are able to travel in relative silence and experience sensitive habitats up close. Careful environmental planning and small, intimate group size minimises the impact of our visit while increasing the opportunity for cultural interaction and wildlife encounters.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
