introduction to Family holiday in Egypt, Egyptian adventure

  • Swim in the warm waters of the Red Sea
  • Explore Egypt's famous landmarks
  • Set sail for an unforgettable journey towards Luxor

    Pyramids & Tutankhamun's Gold!
We start in the bustling capital, Cairo - the biggest city in Africa, dubbed 'the city that never sleeps'! We head first for the Great Pyramids of Giza, on the sands outside the capital, where the brave can venture into the very centre of a pyramid, and also see the enigmatic Sphinx. More amazing sights confront us at the Egyptian Museum on the last day.

    All Aboard to Aswan
Next we take the sleeper train south to the wonderfully laid back desert city of Aswan. Here we wander the bazaars in search of spices, relax by the pool and take a trip to St Simeon's Monastery by camel - there's even time for a visit to the unforgettable temples at Abu Simbel (optional). A highlight for many will be the opportunity to visit a local village where we'll enjoy a traditional Nubian meal. Next we board our feluccas - the traditional lateen-rigged boats of the Nile. We sail north towards Luxor, the countryside and villages slipping by. At night we have a campfire and our crew may bring out the drums before we drift off to sleep on deck under the stars.

Valley of the Kings & Red Sea
In Luxor there's the chance to take an optional hot-air balloon flight over ancient Thebes. Mounting donkeys we'll ride donkeys to Hatshepsut Temple and visit Valley of the Kings before returning to enjoy a horse-drawn calesh ride to Karnak Temple. Moving on to Safaga, we experience a different aspect of Egypt: the Red Sea. Children and adults alike will love its warm waters - great for snorkelling amidst a dazzling show of multi-coloured fish and coral. Finally we fly back to Cairo.

This tourism business won an Award in our 2008 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards - organised by responsibletravel.com in association with The Daily Telegraph, World Travel Market, Geographical Magazine, of the Royal Geographical Society and BBC World News.

how this holiday makes a difference
On this tour, we are able to benefit a wider range of people then conventional tourism by providing a helping financial benefit to the region. We support the local economy by using local leaders and guides, staying at different hotels and thus spreading the money across the country.

We stay on a bed and breakfast basis and so for most of the meals we eat out at local restaurants, not only experiencing different foods and customs but also aiding the local economy by visiting many different places to eat.

With the optional trips, we also try to give as much back to the economy as we take out. We take trips in a felucca and by camels thus providing income for their owners and giving us a great cultural experience. The feluccas of course use only the wind for power - perhaps the most environmentally friendly way one can travel, whilst our focus on responsible tourism gets local people talking about it, which leads to a greater understanding of the reason it is so important.

Our Tour Leaders are all trained by us in the importance of responsible tourism with guidance given on how they can make a difference. This then percolates down through those they deal with.

As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, Hope Worldwide and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism, such as Tourism Concern, The Travel Foundation and AITO. Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and we have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. Carbon offsets for all flights booked with us are included in the tour cost.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
