the amazing things you'll be doing
The town of Sort in the Spanish Pyrenees offers stunning scenery, a great location and a range of superb activities. Little wonder that it has become a haven for activity and adventure enthusiasts. This holiday is based on, and around, the Noguera Palleresa River and is a gentle adventure aimed at providing thrills with time for relaxation and exploration. It includes probably the best day of white water rafting anywhere in Europe.

Accommodation:  Our base is the Hotel Pey in the Catalan town of Sort, a family-run hotel overlooking the river and centrally situated within the town.

Accommodation is in apartments with one double bedroom, a lounge area with two pull-out beds, bathroom and kitchenette. En-suite twin and triple rooms are also available as well as a very limited number of two bedroom apartments. There is an outdoor swimming pool, a small games room and a sauna. The hotel has a spacious bar and lounge. The town has a wide range of bars and eateries from pizza and tapas to the unforgettable Michelin-starred Fogony.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Flights, arrival and introduction. We will be transferred from Barcelona Airport to our accommodation in the Pyrenean town of Sort. After settling in to our apartments, we will meet with the rest of the group for a welcome meal and an introductory meeting with our guide.
Day 2:National Park picnic trek. Today we witness the outstanding natural beauty of the Aigues Tortes National Park with 3000m peaks and picture postcard lakes. Our gentle trek allows us to fully appreciate Catalonia’s mountain landscapes. Picnic lunch.
Day 3:Canyoning - level 1. We use a family friendly route and after a 30 minute walk (gentle uphill) we hit the water. We use various methods to descend the canyon including natural water slides and chutes, abseiling and simply jumping into deep pools. A great experience in the water for all the family.
Day 4:Guingueta Lake action day. A jam-packed day featuring 6 different activities and a picnic lunch. From our base at Guingueta Lake you will spend time cycling, rock climbing on an artificial wall, playing volleyball and football, kayaking and canoeing.
Day 5:Open kayaking. This is an ideal sport for those who wish to experience the sensation of white water without the need for too much skill. After instruction, you set off towards the rapids of the Noguera Palleresa River. The descent makes it possible to discover beautiful spots on the river and enjoy the thrill of white water without being an experienced paddler.
Day 6:Free day. Try one of your favourite activities again or sample an array of additional activities available locally including: walking, trekking, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, quad biking, hydrospeeding, advanced canyoning and paragliding. Alternatively, why not take a day off and simply relax by the hotel’s swimming pool?
Day 7:White water rafting. In our opinion, the Noguera Palleresa offers possibly the best day of white water rafting anywhere in Europe. It’s not just the rapids that make today such a great experience. Stunning mountain scenery and the sheer, steep sided rock faces of the Canyonlands add to an unforgettable day on the water. Lunch included.
Day 8:Depart or extend your stay. Today it’s time to wave goodbye to Sort as we transfer back to Barcelona Airport. Alternatively you can choose to extend your stay. We offer a 4 day extension here in Sort allowing you plenty of time to relax or to try some of the many activities available locally.
travellers' tales
Most memorable? I'd have to plump for the white water rafting - fabulous, but the via ferrata we arranged on our free day was also awesome. (more)
how this holiday makes a difference
The Pallars Sobera Region is the base for this exciting Family Activity Holiday in the Catalan Pyrenees. Specifically we are based in the small town of Sort on the banks of the Noguera Pallaresa river, where all the water based activities take place. The Hotel Pey is run by the Salvans Family, one of the most important families in the region with a fierce commitment to the protection of the Catalan culture, environment and language, whilst pioneering the development of the local economy through tourism and by only working with companies who share this philosophy.

Accommodation is strictly limited in the area which allows careful management of tourism in terms of numbers. The hotel promotes the responsible use of natural resources and encourages guests to re-use towels rather than submit them for daily cleaning.

Our activity partners, Carlos and Lluis Rabeneda, are equally committed to the promotion and protection of the local Catalan culture and this infuses every aspect of their business. Guides and Instructors must not only demonstrate their professionalism and ability, but also have to be seen to endorse and practice the company’s policy.

They believe wholeheartedly in impressing upon visitors that it is possible to enjoy a wonderful holiday but still be responsible to the environment. This is particularly highlighted during the Trek in the Aigues Tortes National Park on the first activity day. At the entrance to the National Park clients are shown a collage made up of some 10,000 cigarette ends which were collected in one day of environmental clean up in the National Park.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
