the amazing things you'll be doing
The North of Argentina is the most fascinating area of Argentina concerning variety of ecosystems, landscapes & culture. Here you find the soul of indigenous cultures mixed with Spanish influences & the magnificent Andes.
You stay in typical atmospheric hotels combined with special Argentinean estancias and the best pousada & hotel available at the Ibera marshes & Iguazu waterfalls.
This journey starts with an original hotel in Buenos Aires, a fusion of cultural influences from a trendy metropolis and Italian cuisine, to native Indian roots with lively handicraft markets. From grand avenues, boutique shops, excellent shopping and nightlife to subtropical trees & climate.
You continue your travel to a lovely posada in the Iberas marshes, with 2 days for wildlife watching, and a visit and stay on both the Argentinean & Brazilian sides of the Iguazu waterfalls, the largest waterfalls of the world, including nature excursions in the tropical Brazilian forest. From here you travel back to Buenos Aires to La Rioja situated at the feet of the Andes. You pick up your rental car and in a magnificent journey through the Andes you visit several national parks & archaeological sites, from Ischigualasto, where the oldest dinosaurs are found, to the Moonvalley of Talampayo with amazing rock formations, to the Parque de los Menhires, an archaeological menhir puzzle and a pre-Inca native settlement in Quilmes.
You continue through the Valley of Calchaquies from Cafayate to Cachi with Indian villages, famous wine houses, abandoned haciendas, plains with huge cactuses & amazingly shaped rock formations. A valley to get inspired by the present & history. After the Calchaquies valley you have a free day in a luxury estancia House of Jasmines near the city of Salta. From here you continue to the Altiplano of 4000 meters high with the typical puna vegetation, and the largest salt plains of Argentina, after which you descend into the colourful canyon landscapes of Purmamarca & Humahuaca canyon. You can visit the pre-Inca ruins of Tilcara or go on shopping handicrafts on a free day and participate in a special lama trekking the following day, to experience how the people traveled in the earlier days, before the Spaniards introduced the horse & mule.
You follow in this self drive parts of the famous route 40, from Moonvalley, the wine fields of Cafayate to the Altiplano & the saltplains. It is a national, on some stretches unpaved route of undescribed beauty for the individual traveler. The route runs from Patagonia to the border of Bolivia. The itinerary in the dry season can be accomplished without problems with a normal car.
When you return to Salta again, you descend in altitude and cross through a wonderful & lush green mountain cloud forest, to complete your travel through the northwest.
Extensions: Unique trekking by horse from 3-10 days, guided by Argentinean Gauchos can be added to your program. You travel through fascinating valleys & mountains with pre-Inca & Incaica sites, where you can come only on foot or by horse. See more about horse riding and trekking in Argentina here.

tailor made holiday
This trip can be tailormade to create a unique holiday for your individual requirements by travel experts with intimate knowledge of the destination. It is a more luxurious trip that will suit those who enjoy immersing themselves in new cultures and environments before relaxing in comfort in some of the best and most characterful local accommodation! Quality and value are the hallmark of these trips.how this holiday makes a difference
|
All nature excursions and trekking are guided by local guides with ecological and/or cultural knowledge and are organized by local organizations, which are taking care of the cultural heritage and the environment with ecological awareness. This means that the organizations take care of the wildlife, the surface water, nature in general and the disposal of waste.
The companies that take care of the transport are locally owned and result in a direct income for the Argentinean people. The accommodations are chosen for Argentinean ambiance, style & location and directly create employment for the Argentinean people. The Hotel Das Cataratas, where 2 nights are spend, is spectacular situated inside the Brazilian National Park near the falls of Iguazu, and received in the year 2000 as the first Ecological Resort in Latin America their certification. Their four main activities consist of separated waste collection, conserving the natural water supplies & other resources, saving electricity and training of the team in ecological awareness. On your travel in NW Argentina you will stay overnight in several indigenous communities, and your stay directly contributes to the economic development of the indigenous small villages in the Andes. The Argentinean people are aware that it is important to take care of their beautiful nature, as this is one of the main attractions for tourists coming to the Northwest, and tourism is becoming gradually more important in this area and provides income for the people on different levels. By staying overnight in some small hotels, eating in local restaurants, buying handicrafts, shop on markets and using services of local guides, as mentioned in the program. Local guides will also be a welcome source to give you all information about nature, culture and customs that you would like to know. When you visit National Parks your entrance fee contributes directly to the conservation of this park and/or archaeological site, and maintains employment for local communities as well. Quite new is that local operators have started offering short treks with lamas, as in pre-Colombian times the indigenous people used to trek over large distances through the Andes. Participating in these treks support these initiatives in which local indigenous people regain their knowledge and cultural awareness, which was gradually wiped out during the Spanish conquest. The individual & travels are designed and offered by ecological guides who live in Latin America, and have been guiding in the Andes for many years. They offer the possibility to travel by horse or on foot through this part of NW Argentina, as they know just how unique & authentic this area and the lifestyle of the gauchos still is. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
