introduction to Winter activity holiday in Finnish Lapland

Located close to Finland's newest National Park, the Syote National Park, what distinguishes this region is the fact that it receives the most snowfall per annum which transforms the landscape making it a magical location for a winter holiday.

Iso-Syote lies in the heart of Kuusamo Lapland and is Finland's southernmost Fell region offering a perfectly balanced combination of activity, superb accommodation and pristine wilderness. There are 12 ski slopes at Iso-Syote as well as over a 100km of cross country ski trails. Floodlights mean that you can ski many slopes in the evening.

Accommodation: Iso-Syote Log Cabins
Winter adventure accommodationHaving your own log cabin to return to after a day of winter activity is a real treat. The cabins in Iso Syote are all individually decorated so no two are the same, however the facilities provided are consistent. In general the cabins will sleep 2 adults and 2 children (larger cabins are available on request). The cabins have one bedroom or alcove downstairs and a loft area with additional beds as well as a convertible sofa. Each cabin comes equipped with a living room with a well equipped kitchenettem, fireplace, and a dining area. They each have their own saunas and a WC with shower.

All are equipped with TV, drying cupboard and hair dryers. You will be provided with a daily DIY breakfast pack in the comfort of your cabins. Lunches (that aren't taken outdoors) and evening meals are served in the Taiga Restaurant located approximately 10 minutes walk from the cabins. There is also a shop within walking distance.

Please note that departures on 07, 14, 21 & 28 Mar & 04 Apr 2010 departure dates include scheduled flights with Finnair from Heathrow (via Helsinki). All other dates include direct charter flights from London Gatwick.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Arrival, Transfers and Introduction. You will be greeted on arrival at Kuusamo airport and transferred to Syote. You will have a meeting with your guide about the week's adventures and a welcome dinner.
Day 2:Snowshoes and Reindeer. After breakfast in your cabins you will meet your guide for a snowshoe trek to the Syote Nature Centre. The exhibition will tell you about the area's history and culture as well as the flora and fauna that you may encounter. After lunch you will visit a local reindeer herder and learn about the lives of the animals and their importance to the region. You will take a short sleigh ride and warm drinks will be served in a teepee. Welcome to Lapland!
Day 3-4:Overnight snowmobile safari. You will start today with full safety briefing and tuition on how to handle a snowmobile. When you depart on the trail you will head through the winter forests past branches laden with snow and across frozen waterways.. The exhilaration of opening the throttle on a frozen lake with the Arctic wilderness in front of you is not easily forgotten. You will stop for campfire picnics and reach your wilderness hostel late in the afternoon. There will be the opportunity for a relaxing sauna before a delicious dinner is served. After a hearty breakfast you will continue your safari and head back towards the comforts of Syote having traveled approximately 100kms over the two days. In the early afternoon you will arrive back at the safari house where lunch will be waiting. You then have the rest of the day free to relax.
Day 5:Overnight husky safari. This morning after a short transfer to the husky farm you will meet your companions for the next two days – a team of huskies. You will be given full instruction and tuition on how to handle your sled and team before heading out into the wilderness. You will travel through the stunning scenery of Syote National Park and get to experience the landscape in a totally different way. Having traveled around 30kms you arrive at your farm house accommodation. The dogs are priority and they will be fed and watered before you get to relax in the waiting sauna. Dinner will be served in the farmhouse dining room. After a good night's sleep you will be woken by the sound of what sound like hungry wolves – don't panic it's just the dogs eager to be on the road again. You will take control of your team again and head back to the husky farm arriving around noon. Relaxing and reminiscing will be the order of the afternoon as you reflect on the adventures of the past few days.
Day 6:Free day or optional activities. After the exertions of the week we have given you a well deserved day off. For those who want to do additional activities however there is still plenty to try such as cross country or downhill skiing. Tonight there will be a farewell dinner.

how this holiday makes a difference
Community
The common objective of North East Finland, including the area around Syote, is to develop from nationally well-known tourist resorts into an internationally attractive outdoor tourist region.

Tourism is the most vital industry in the area and gives work to about 1000 people generating an annual total tourist income of over 104 million. Tourism has a positive impact both socially and economically on people living in these remote areas. Local authorities, tourism organizations and tourism providers all work together in various fields, continuously developing programmes which will ensure that tourism in the region is managed sensibly and impacts positively on local communities and the environment. The philosophy in the region is to ensure that tourism providers use, to the greatest extent possible, local providers, be it for hotels, activities or employment and visitors are positively encouraged to try locally produced food and drink.

Iso Syote is officially a small ski resort, we are however glad to be able to offer an alternative source of income to the local suppliers through our multi activity programmes. As ski companies flounder in difficult economic conditions this becomes more important to the local economy.

Environment
The cabins which we utilize in the area are all built from sustainable timber sources and the food served in the restaurant is sourced locally wherever possible.

We also include a visit to Syote Nature Centre which means that guests get to learn about the local environment, the flora and fauna as well as what is being done to preserve and protect it.

We also include a visit to a reindeer herder so that guests can experience first hand the Sámi culture and way of life which is so important to this area. We always encourage guests to learn some of the local language and to interact with the local people when they can. We hope that this will encourage better cultural understanding and provide a deeper insight into the destination for our clients.

Where activities such as snowmobiling may have a minor impact on the environment, such pastimes are carefully managed and are part of every day life in these parts. Trails are clearly defined and managed with tourists only allowed to drive snowmobiles under the close supervision of fully qualified instructors.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
