introduction to Thai hill tribe trek & elephant conservation

Get up close with elephants and enjoy a travel experience unlike any other. Take this opportunity to assist with the preservation of one of the world’s most respected animals and to explore Thailand - the land of smiles. Visit Bangkok, the rich green hills of the tribal north, the lush jungle of the interior, and the paradise of the southern islands and beaches. Volunteers will be assisting at ‘The Elephant Nature Park’ in Chiang Mai, established to preserve the future of elephants in Northern Thailand. This became jeopardised in 1989 when logging was banned and local families could no longer afford to support these magnificent animals.

You’ll then go on to enjoy many other activities, before rounding off the adventure with time to chill out amidst the spectacular limestone karsts, sandy beaches and secluded bays of Krabi.

The Volunteer Programme
Assisting the mahouts (elephant trainers) and veterinarians at ‘The Elephant Nature Park’, volunteers will become familiar with elephant commands and experience a hands-on approach to feeding, bathing and observing the elephants in their natural environment. Learning about the reforestation of elephant habitats and herbal cures for treating elephant disease, you’ll be taken out to remote hill tribe villages where you will help to educate the local families on how best to look after the elephants they still keep. By working closely with the park staff and the elephants themselves, volunteers will not only gain a true understanding of what is required to save this gentle giant from extinction but also assist in the very process itself!

traveller reviews for Thai hill tribe trek & elephant conservation

The most memorable part was playing pick up stones with the children in the Berber village. Despite having no common language we managed to communicate and enjoy each others company with equal measures of curiosity on both sides.  (more)

how this holiday makes a difference
The Elephant Nature Park was founded by local resident, Sangduen Chailert (LEK) around ten years ago. Having had an elephant in the family Lek was always fond of these gentle giants and decided to make it her mission to help as many as she could after the logging ban in 1989. The park not only looks after the elephants but also employs and trains their original mahouts (trainers). Through your volunteering efforts and donations to the park, Lek is able to rescue more and more elephants and employ their trainers.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
