the amazing things you'll be doing
This itinerary visits some of the most spectacular scenery in Sumatra and Java. You will get the opportunity to visit an Orangutan rehabilitation centre and explore the pristine rainforest of Sumatra.

Explore Java's cultural heartland, Yogyakarta and its famous temple complexes of Prambanan and Borobudur. From here you will journey to the spectacular Mount Bromo and the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. From this magical lunar landscape you will journey to the beach side National Park of Buluran Mountain and explore the spectacular volcano Mount Ijen. This trip does involve hiking but can certainly be managed by those of moderate fitness. The perfect ending to this trip would be some time on the beach either in Bali or Lombok.
best time to travel
All year except December and January when it will be wetter and the roads will be more difficult to navigate.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Medan – Bohorok. Following arrival at Medan airport you depart for Bohorok (Southern part of Leuser National Park) with your private driver to see the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre at Bukit Lawang. Here, orangutans are trained to return to their natural habitat. After the visit, you will check in at Bohorok Ecolodge.
Day 2:Bohorok – Leuser National Park Trekking. After breakfast, enjoy a hike in the tropical rain forest around the station, accompanied by a local ranger. Encounter orangutan, leaf monkey, macaque, gibbons, siamang and abundant bird life. In the late afternoon, return to your hotel.
Day 3:Bohorok – Tangkahan. After breakfast depart for Tangkahan rainforest, part of the Leuser National Park. Arriving into Tangkahan, check-in to the Black Tiger Lodge. After lunch start on a two and a half hour trek accompanied by a local ranger. Incredible tropical plants, many of which are medicinal, can be seen along the trail. If you are lucky you can find orangutan, leaves monkey, long tailed macaque and great argus. In the late afternoon, return to your lodge for the night.
Day 4:Tangkahan – Trekking. This morning you will start an adventurous 6.8 km trail that will take about six hours. Enjoy the rainforest and explore a bat-filled cave. The journey concludes by riding on a rubber tube down the rapid current of Batang Serangan river. Dinner and overnight is provided at the Lodge.
Day 5:Tangkahan – Medan – Yogyakarta. Return to Medan and transfer to the airport for a flight to Yogyakarta, the cultural heart of Java. Transfer to Dusun Jogja Village where the rest of the day is at your leisure.
Day 6:Yogya. This morning, explore Kota Gede’s market and enjoy a leisurely walking tour through this old capital. Wander amidst kampoong houses to the monolith throne of Panembahan Senopati (the founder of 2nd Mataram Dynasty). Afterwards, proceed to Sultan’s Palace, Taman Sari, the ruins of water palace built by 1st Sultan and the bird market. Enjoy Java’s most beautiful Hindu shrine 9th century of Prambanan Temple.
Day 7:Yogya. An early start to watch the sunrise from Borobudur Temple. This great Buddhist shrine is situated some 60 km North West of Yogyakarta. Stop off at nearby Mendut Temple with its charming Buddha Sakyamuni Statue. The itinerary then continues to Ketep-Pass providing a stunning view of Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes.
Day 8:Yogya. A day at leisure.
Day 9:Yogya – Train – Surabaya – Seloliman. This morning, take a scenic rail journey to Surabaya, past rural countryside views and rice fields. In the afternoon, you will visit Seloliman village, on the slopes of Mount Penanggungan. If time allows take a short hike through the rice field terraces and visit the hydropower station along the stream. Stay overnight at the Environmental Educational Centre and enjoy the view from 1,000 metres above sea level.
Day 10:Seloliman – Mt. Bromo. Take a 2 hour guided walk through the rainforest learning about the ecosystem of the rainforest. The hike ends at the ancient sacred springs of Candi Jolotundo. Return to the Centre and continue on to Mount Bromo.
Day 11:Mt. Bromo – Sumberwaru. Travelling by 4x4 jeep, you will travel to Mount Penanjakan to view the sunrise then drive further down to the crater. Transferring to horseback you will cross the sea of sand to reach Mount Bromo. Afterwards, return to the hotel for breakfast and drive along the north coastal route of East Java to Sumberwaru village, at the western tip of Baluran National Park. Overnight is at the rustically comfortable Rosa’s Ecolodge with a chance to meet the locals and enjoy their refreshments.
Day 12:Sumberwaru. Spend the whole day at a remote deserted beach, still part of the Baluran National Park. This is in a small bay, flanked by beautiful limestone hills. There is ample time to climb the limestone hills and chances to see wildlife as well. In the afternoon board the traditional Madurese fishing boat and sail back to the lodge.
Day 13:Sumberwaru – Randu Agung. The day starts very early for a chance to view the largely nocturnal wildlife in the National Park. Stop off at Bama Beach to experience another glorious sunrise, returning to the lodge for a well-deserved breakfast and shower. In the afternoon, travel to Ijen Resort and Villas.
Day 14:Mount Ijen – Randu Agung. In the morning, drive up to Ijen for a moderate hike up to the peak of Mount Ijen along shady tracks with amazing views. Once you arrive at the peak, the views are truly stunning. The afternoon is at your leisure.
Day 15:Randu Agung – Gilimanuk – Bali. Soon after breakfast drive down to Ketapang harbour to get the ferry to Gilimanuk, the gateway to Bali. Drive further to South Bali and stop off at a beach resort to end your holiday with some relaxation if you wish.

tailor made holidays
This trip can be tailormade to create a unique holiday for your individual requirements by travel experts with intimate knowledge of the destination. It is a more individual trip that will suit those who enjoy immersing themselves in new cultures and environments, with the flexibility to plan a trip at your own pace. Quality and value are the hallmark of these trips, with most services being provided on a private basis.
how this holiday makes a difference
All the accommodation has been chosen because it is small and locally owned. In general the accommodation is in Eco-lodges which try to minimise their impact on the environment.

All the treks are led by local rangers who work to protect the local environment. In addition it is very beneficial for the national parks to have money from tourists to help pay for rangers and conservation projects.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
