the amazing things you'll be doing
With a focus on discovering the 'real' Fiji, a cruise on board the Tui Tai to the north combines sailing, diving, kayaking, biking, walking and trekking as well as learning about the traditional Fijian way of life from your crew. The Tui Tai visits isolated villages and virgin reefs, as well as taking you deep into the inland forests during your land-based excursions. For something a bit different, which supports local infrastructure and respects local traditions, the Tui Tai is a superb option.

Beginning in Nadi, this itinerary explores the rugged beauty of Viti Levu’s interior. With the help of local, knowledgeable guides you can absorb the traditional Fijian culture at a local village, where you will be welcomed by the elders and invited to join a kava ceremony. Many of the villages still enjoy a relatively untouched existence which is exciting to experience.

Before heading to the north, you have time to explore the wild interior, where you find waterfalls and rainforest, mountainous peaks and hidden pools. By walking or kayaking you can get away from the main circular route around the island and discover its hidden landscapes.

Finally head to the north, where you take a step back in time. Here the traditional way of life is much more evident, and the tourism is low-key, affording a much more authentic Fijian experience. Your cruise will give you access to islands which few visitors get the chance to explore, and with a variety of activities on offer you can experience the islands from both the land and the water.
best time to go
Fiji's dry season runs from May to October, making this the best time to visit the islands. However the climate is mild year-round and so travel is possible outside these months, but cyclones are more common between November and April.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Arrive in Nadi and transfer to nearby Sonaisali Island to relax on the beach after the flight.
Day 2:Enjoy a day in the company of a local guide. You will be welcomed into a local village for a traditional kava ceremony and to meet the villagers and learn about their way of life. Take a dip in a refreshing waterfall and enjoy a picnic lunch amongst the coconut plantations.
Day 3:Take a domestic flight north to Savusavu and transfer to the boat. Your activities begin straight away, with sea kayaking, snorkelling and diving amongst the spinner dolphins on the agenda. Set sail this evening.
Day 4:Visit the Polynesian island of Kioa and watch the local fishermen as they paddle out to work. Explore the Tunuloa Peninsula by mountain bike, dive the Rainbow Reef or look for rare endemic bird species.
Day 5:Arrive at Taveuni and head into the Bouma National Heritage Park by bike. Stop for a refreshing dip in one of the pristine waterfalls. Later, on Qamea Island, visit the remote village of Togo for a tour and cultural performance.
Day 6:Sail to the seven tiny atolls known as the Ringgold Isles. Hike to the summit of a crater for spectacular views, or kayak around the sheltered lagoon. There are some superb dive and snorkelling opportunities around these stunning reefs.
Day 7:Visit the island of Rabi, with its Micronesian population. In the village of Tabiang learn about their relocation from Kiribati after World War 2. Enjoy one of the most picturesque white sand beaches in Fiji.
Day 8:Returning to Taveuni, kayak to Nacawa River Falls. Hike the Lavena Coastal Walk and explore the black sand beaches.
Day 9:Enjoy idyllic Albert Cove, where you can dive, snorkel, kayak, walk or relax on the beach.
Day 10:Bid farewell to your captain and crew, and return to Savusavu for your flight back to Nadi and your onward connection.

how this holiday makes a difference
Environment:
Much of the environment in Fiji is fragile, and it is imperative that both the local population and visitors to the islands are aware of the irreparable damage which can be caused to eco-systems such as the reefs. We try wherever possible to recommend guides, activities and accommodation which demonstrate a clear commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism principles.

On the main island of Viti Levu we have suggested Sonaisali Island Resort. This was the first resort in Fiji to become Green Globe Certified, and the management are passionate about minimising the impact of the resort on the island. An example of their efforts is their hydroponic farm which supplies fresh, organic food daily for both guests and staff.

In the Mamanuca Islands we recommend Tokoriki Island Resort, a founding member of the Mamanuca Environment Society, who strive to improve and protect the local environment through awareness and education. MES contributes to the community in a number of different ways, from education programmes in schools to clean-up campaigns in surrounding villages. Tokoriki has also initiated the 'giant clam regeneration project', reintroducing three different species of giant clams which had previously disappeared to the waters around the island.

Community:
The management at Sonaisali Island Resort are committed to employing local Fijians throughout the company. The Tui Tai is the only luxury-adventure ship operating in the Pacific Cultural Triangle, providing guests a remarkable look at three distinct cultures that history and circumstance have put together within a nearby triangle of islands. In addition to visiting islands where indigenous Fijians live, Tui Tai sails to islands where Polynesians and Micronesians were relocated after World War II, and where the villagers live in their historically natural ways.

Only the Pacific Cultural Triangle offers adventurers a chance to experience such strikingly different cultures and histories during a one-week visit. In the last year, the Tui Tai Charitable Fund has provided medical support, advanced education, student housing, community development, building repair, new construction, delivery of important medicines, and emergency transportation to the island communities. In addition to these on-going services, The Tui Tai Charitable Fund is currently collecting donations specifically for further development and supplies in the region. The operators of Tui Tai are committed to a style of travel that is environmentally, culturally and socially responsible.

On the ground in Fiji we use an excellent, local, family-owned agent who demonstrate care for the environment, preservation of their culture and commitment to the community. As part of an on-going project they have helped create townships which provide new, cyclone resistant housing with running water where previously there had been inadequate housing. Every visitor is greeted on arrival with a true Fijian welcome, and looked after throughout the duration of their stay in Fiji.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
