El Puma Ecological Park is an animal breeding and rehabilitation centre near Posadas that aims to promote the welfare of wild animals that are native to Argentina. Their objectives are to help sick or injured animals that have been captured by forest rangers by nursing them back to health and to raise the numbers of native species by breeding them while in captivity. The animals are rehabilitated at the centre and then once ready released back to their natural habitat, if possible. El Puma works with the Ministry of Ecology of that province and depends on them for funding.

travellers' tales
Most memorable were the children I met at my project, the Iguazu falls and the volunteers I met through the project. (more)
volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you are looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world. Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.

Animal Rehabilitation in Argentina
Due to the lack of financial resources, the expertise and funding provided by private groups and international conservation agencies is essential to supplement what the Ministry of Ecology provides for conservation in Argentina. This centre desperately needs assistance in taking care of the animals and with volunteers making up a substantial proportion of the labour force; you can really make a valuable contribution by volunteering here. Animal rehabilitation is extremely important in Argentina in order to protect the country's wildlife, which has long been victim to trafficking. Essentially, the government pays the water, electricity, fuel and the wage bills but everything else relies on donations and the small amount of revenue acquired through entry fees. This, of course, means no donations, no centre, therefore this volunteer scheme is vital for the parks continuation. The biggest requirement for this project is a strong love of all animals, as well as the readiness to be involved with the more basic duties that will be required. You should be committed and willing to help out wherever needed and a love of the outdoors is essential. Your duties may include feeding the animals, cleaning and repairing all animal enclosures, building new enclosures, giving guided tours of the centre to any English speaking visitors, observation and data collection of the animals for research. This project includes home stay – throughout the project you will be staying with native Argentineans in Posadas, a lively city of 250,000, which boasts interesting markets, friendly cafes, cinemas and museums. This allows you to experience authentic culture and enables you to form meaningful relationships with the local people, becoming part of the community. Community work with orphans in Posadas, Argentina As the project has only a few members of staff to carry out all the duties of the home, volunteers are desperately needed in all aspects of its running. By volunteering you can really help improve the lives of these children. Your main duties are to spend time with the children and help plan recreational activities with them, but you might also help with cleaning duties, help during meal times, help the children to get ready in the mornings, assist on various trips, help out with homework and teach English – basically all the things necessary to provide the children with a balanced lifestyle that, due to their situation, they would otherwise be unable to have. Foremost, volunteers must have a love of children and be committed to working with them. You will need to be flexible and willing to roll up your sleeves and jump right in! A pro-active attitude is essential, and any skills that you have in any area working with children, from sports and music to drama, art or fundraising will be more than welcome. Sister Angela, who runs the children’s home, is interested in providing the children with the opportunity to meet people of other cultures, and so she hopes to encourage cultural exchange by hosting volunteers at the home. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
