the amazing things you'll be doing
We place skilled volunteers to work with, not instead of, local people. Your skills will be matched to the specific needs of a project.

We need educators, administrators, counsellors IT experts and youth workers. The projects’ goals are to build the capacity of local school teachers in South Africa. The projects will welcome volunteers’ assistance, particularly from people with experience in education, school administration, counselling and training. Each volunteers skills are individually matched to the needs of the schools. Volunteers are only placed with the full and informed consent of the projects and volunteers work with not instead of local people.

We need your skills on 8 different projects in South Africa - from pre school to adult education. You could work in a township high school helping teachers develop lesson planning and teaching methods, train local pre school teachers in play therapy and learning thru play, prepare high school students for university or employment or train local people in basic business skills.

You will be briefed by previous volunteers, local people and by us in the UK. You will have the security of the full support during your placement of local people who have close links to the project and the community in which it is based. You can choose to live with a local family or stay in a locally owned guesthouse, or even both! You will know where and how your money is spent.
a day in a life of a volunteer
My task was to assist the teacher who was attempting to get all 44 children to a standard in their numeracy, literacy and behaviour ready for graduation into Grade 1 in December. A tall task as there were quite a few who were way behind with their letters and colours and with so many children in the class it was virtually impossible for her to keep the attention of all of them whilst trying to cover a subject. But we did have fun and they do love singing. Pam Brown
volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you are looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
highly commended
This tourism business was Highly Commended in our 2007 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards - the largest awards of their kind in the world, and organised by responsibletravel.com in association with The Times, World Travel Market and Geographical Magazine, of the Royal Geographical Society.

Since 2004, the Awards has recognised individuals, companies and organisations in travel making a big commitment to the culture and economies of local communities and helping to conserve biodiversity.

how this holiday makes a difference
Our core values are responsibility & sustainability, respect & dignity, service & partnership and economic transparency.

Responsibility & sustainability: You will be working with principals and staff to enhance their own teaching capacity, not taking the place of any local teacher or member of staff. Each volunteer placement is part of a considered programme with specific aims to enhance local abilities not to replace them. The price includes a donation which ensures that your volunteer placement is in no way subsidised by the project.

Respect & dignity: mutual respect for personal and cultural dignity involves listening to each other and learning from each other. The local people with whom you live and work are your hosts – your knowledge and perceptions will differ from theirs, but both sets of values are equally valid. You will be fully prepared for your placement, and given guidance on how to maximise the potential mutual benefits.

Service & partnership: We work together with the Project Management Team – all of whom are local people - in matching you and your skills to the specific requirements of the schools and the project. In this way, we facilitate partnerships between you and the project where your volunteer input is part of a larger programme and not just a drop in the ocean!

Economic transparency: the price of the placement is paid by you straight to the Project Management Team, not to us – at least 80% of the price remains where it is needed most, in the host country and your project donation is used exclusively for this project.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
