introduction to Windsurfing holidays in Dahab, Egypt

Dahab is situated 90km north of Sharm el Sheikh, on the shores of the Gulf of Aqaba, at the foot the majestic mountains of the Sinai peninsular. Dahab, meaning 'Gold' was once nothing more than a Bedouin village with the only permanent building being a Mosque.

In recent years, it has become a paradise for divers and windsurfers, with modern facilities and reliable winds. We have added dinghy sailing, mountain biking, tennis and kitesurfing to the mix to create an active beach holiday in a unique location.

Highlights include:
  • World-renowned windsurfing with a choice of windsurfing areas
  • Year-round active holidays
  • Comfortable hotel
  • Wide range of children's clubs
  • Explore Egypt
  • Plenty of other water sports & land-based activities

Dahab is one of the best locations for windsurfing in the Red Sea, boasting over 300 days a year of winds between force 4 and 7. A large sand spit jutting into the Gulf of Aqaba provides up to 2km of flat water reaching, with a clean cross off-shore breeze, ideal for cracking those carving manoeuvres.

Expert sailors may venture beyond the sand bar to the waves of Dahab's outer sailing area. Beginners should not be put off by the strong wind as there are plenty of small sails to use and the naturally formed lagoon provides easy launching conditions.

Our Dahab centre is a Test Centre for Starboard boards and Tushingham sails. A vast array of the latest equipment is on offer to ensure windsurfers of all levels will be kept more than entertained. Beginner boards like Starboard's Go and F-type offer a great introduction to windsurfing, while widestyle boards like the Carve range are great for getting improvers planing as easily as possible. Experts will be excited by the prospect of Starboard's latest wave and freestyle boards like the Flare, Evo and Kombat. There may even be prototypes available as Starboard work on new designs and fly them out for testing. Tushingham rigs have long been our favourites, and we're proud to offer a full range on our Dahab kit racks, with a wide selection of sizes and styles to appeal to sailors of all levels.

As you'd expect, tuition will be provided to the same formula that makes our other centres so successful. RYA qualified instructors teach within our status as an RYA Training Centre, ensuring RYA Levels 1 to 4 are available as keen learners make the most of the wind. The new Fast Fwd tuition scheme is also available, reflecting the new approach to learning that accompanies the revolutionary changes in windsurfing equipment.

With all this great wind and the latest equipment, it's not just the adults that are dying to get out on the water! Our Juniors club provides specialist equipment and team15 instruction to all those youngsters who have tried windsurfing before and know it's the only way they want to spend their holiday!

Location: The town of Dahab still retains much of its rustic charm with the tourist centre of Masbet full of cafés, restaurants, colourful markets and great shopping. Egypt is a fascinating country to visit. Its culture and history, combined with the chance to visit world-renowned archaeological sites, offer an experience unlike any of our other destinations.

Weather: The temperatures in the summer can reach as high as 40°C but the humidity is generally low. We would advise enjoying shade during times of midday sun. In winter, the temperatures drop to an average of 20°C. Unless you really suffer from the cold, a 5mm wetsuit should be suitable for divers, while most windsurfers and sailors will not need wetsuits, though some wear a shorty.

Accommodation: Rooms have partial sea view, side sea view or garden view, with sea view rooms enjoying a slightly more spacious layout and ensuite facilities of a high standard. The rooms have twin or double beds and the seaview rooms have a third roll-away bed suitable for a child. These rooms are of a good standard with seaview and are located close to our equipment racks, beach bar and creche. All rooms have air conditioning, direct dial telephone, radio, satellite TV, mini bar and ensuite shower and wc.

PLEASE NOTE: This holiday can be booked with or without flights. Flights are available from the following UK airports: Manchester, Gatwick, London airports, Bristol, Birmingham, Glasgow and Newcastle. When enquiring for further details it would be very helpful if you could let us know how many people are in your party.
  • how this holiday makes a difference
    On this trip
Guests and staff got involved in a clean up of the Three Pools Dive Site which is on the edge of the Namq National Park. Guests and staff got involved in a windsurf lagoon and surrounding reef area clean up in partnership with our local dive supplier. We have 5 Egyptian staff who have been trained to drive powerboats and instruct either dinghy sailing or windsurfing. Four have achieved RYA qualifications. We have run a few windsurfing sessions for some of the local kids which was also a good way to get our Egyptian staff some teaching experience. All packaging from new equipment is taken to the local recycling depot.

    Our company
A few years ago we launched a detailed environmental campaign to assess the impact of our holidays on the local environment - we aimed to lower the use of non-renewable resources and implement The Three R's where possible, by Reducing, Re-using and Recycling wherever we could. Following an audit by the University of Brighton we were able to tighten up many of our overseas practices and by working with our local suppliers we have been making some ground in these important areas. Back in the UK our state-of-the-art offices have a relatively small carbon foot print and developments with our printers mean that this brochure becomes more and more sustainable each year. But enough of the Three R's - Responsible Travel takes our concerns a step further.

We operate our holidays in some very beautiful places and we want to keep them this way. Responsible Travel is about respecting the different countries and cultures that we visit and about helping to give them the resources they need to manage the long term future of the places that we all love to visit. Our tourism can be a great boost to the local communities in which we operate. We use only locally owned properties - many are family owned and managed. We don't provide 'all inclusive' holidays, preferring to encourage you to explore the local environment and to bring much needed cash into the local community.

This philosophy has enabled us to grow with the communities in which we operate and not swamp them - you won't find a 'little England' feel at any of our centres; you'll feel that you really are in a foreign place amongst friendly welcoming foreign hosts.

Accommodation on Dahab windsurfing holiday, EgyptRecently our parent company has made a huge commitment to Responsible Travel and, along with other responsible tour operators, they have funded the start up of a new charity 'The Travel Foundation' which seeks to develop practical solutions to help improve and protect holiday destinations, their natural environments, traditions and cultures - the very things that make your holiday there so special. In your pre-travel information pack you'll receive more information on how to make your holiday more responsible and we'll be updating guests in resorts of the developments we have made.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
