the amazing things you'll be doing
There is no finer, more welcoming place in the world than Sri Lanka for a cricket holiday.

Its breathtaking combination of golden beaches, energising hill country and cultural sites all within easy reach of the capital Colombo can rival anything the Caribbean has to offer.

You are able to play in the leading venues in the island, including Galle's seaside stadium and the historic Sinhalese Sports Club. But most of all, cricket is a national obsession in Sri Lanka and cricket travel allows you a unique insight into a fascinating island and friendly people.

However, cricket touring is not just about the cricket. It is about learning more about ourselves and other communities we know little about. This tour, designed for schools, provides an opportunity for young cricketers to directly participating in community projects. Whilst in the hills the children will spend an afternoon at a local orphanage playing games with the children and then while on the coast they will participate in a project championed by Sri Lanka’s greatest cricketer, Muttiah Muralitharan, who has been at the forefront of redevelopment and community work ever since the 2004 tsunami.

NB: quote is based on 16 paying pax, the accommodation is based on two-bedroom apartments, rates are subject to possible change.

travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.
how this holiday makes a difference
The tour operator employs local sales staff and IT consultants in Sri Lanka to handle its holiday enquiries and all technical development and web production. Employees are contracted on ‘fair’ terms and offered annual profit shares. The tour operator is also committed to the support of local-level economic, social and environmental community projects in Sri Lanka and donates 2.5% of net annual profit to selected charities. In 2005/06 the operator has committed to making a contribution to Friends of the South, a Galle-based charity that has been managing small-scale tsunami-related projects.

The tour operator uses only local guides and drivers and shows a genuine concern for the welfare of both, believing that their services have been exploited in the past, especially in Sri Lanka, where price-fixing with the major large operators has kept their wages at unacceptably low levels. All drivers are employed on fair terms, ensuring they receive a proper wage for their services and have access to acceptable facilities, including good, clean, comfortable accommodation. All drivers receive a voluntary annual bonus equivalent to a 12.5% increment above the industry-wide driver wage in Sri Lanka.

One afternoon has been set-aside for a community day at an orphanage in Kandy. Sri Lankan orphanages receive paltry support from the local government and the facilities are depressingly basic for those used to European education systems. But the children show unbelievably good spirits despite this and are working hard to build better futures for themselves. An afternoon spent in the orphanage provides them some chance of some riotous fun. Watch out though when they challenge you to a softball match – there are some fine young cricketers in their ranks.

Later on in the tour a full three days has been set aside for participation in of the most inspirational stories to have emerged from the Asian tsunami. The small village of Seenigama was virtually flattened by the surging sea and many lives were lost. But thanks to the help of two of Sri Lanka’s cricketers, Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas, partners in a project now called the Foundation for Goodness, the residents are starting life afresh with revitalised hope. New homes have been constructed and many more are planned for the future. Youth development programmes have been set-up, not just for Seenigama but for villages all around. You will join in, lending your time and energy like so many volunteers to helping local people rebuild for a better future.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
