the amazing things you'll be doing
Sign up for a walking adventure that covers the region south-east of Siena - a part of Tuscany that, despite its great natural beauty, is still relatively uncrowded. The path offers a fascinating progression across a great wealth of different landscapes and through remote medieval villages and walled towns. Taste delicious regional dishes, sip locally produced wines and meet the affable locals on this journey of discovery through delightfully sleepy southern Tuscany.
day-by-day itinerary
Days 1-2:Siena to Buonconvento. Begin the walk in the beautiful medieval city of Siena. Justifiably renowned for its art and architecture as well as its magnificent food and wines, Siena offers an old-world atmosphere. Walk the swirl of city streets around Il Campo to discover fascinating pockets of history.
Days 3-4:Buonconvento to Montalcino. There is a choice of routes to Montalcino - either through the Brunello vineyards and farmlands or via the famous Benedictine abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore. Both offer magnificent views of the surrounding hills. Indulge in a rest day in this classic hilltop town, home of the magnificent Brunello di Montalcino wine. Perhaps take an optional walk to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo, where the monks still conduct services in Gregorian chant.
Day 5:Montalcino to Bagno Vignoni. Walk through farmlands, vineyards and then shady woods to the truly remarkable village of Bagno Vignoni. Hardly known to foreign tourists, this village is one of Tuscany's best-kept secrets. Back in Roman times it was a popular holiday spot - for both its therapeutic natural springs and for its idyllic surroundings.
Day 6:Bagno Vignoni to Pienza. Today's walk travels along a river and then gently up across farmland and past the wonderful church of Pieve di Corsignano to the immaculate medieval-planned town of Pienza. Enjoy free time to explore the picturesque surrounds and take in the magnificent views south to Mt Amiata.
Days 7-8:Pienza to Montepulciano. The final day's walk meanders through glorious hilly landscapes, past the beautiful village of Montichiello and on through fields and vineyards up to Montepulciano - one of Tuscany's most treasured and evocative medieval hill towns.
highly commended
This tourism business was Highly Commended in our 2007 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards - the largest awards of their kind in the world, and organised by responsibletravel.com in association with The Times, World Travel Market and Geographical Magazine, of the Royal Geographical Society.

Since 2004, the Awards has recognised individuals, companies and organisations in travel making a big commitment to the culture and economies of local communities and helping to conserve biodiversity.
how this holiday makes a difference
This trip takes you through the quintessential heart of the Tuscan countryside but it eschews the fancy villas and swimming pools and black-jacketed waiters in favour of a smaller, more homely and grass-roots experience. We use small local bed and breakfasts and affittacamere, which are often overlooked by travel companies due to their small size and low profile. The owners of these places are local and the money goes directly into their families; no chain hotels or syndicates, just very individual historic and charming accommodation. This way, we ensure that ordinary local people share in the benefits of tourism in Tuscany, rather than just suffering it as an intrusion.

You will also stay in historic houses which are integral parts of the lovely old towns you visit and not modern purpose-built hotels. This in itself benefits the local environment, and it ensures that those medieval towns and cities which are so beloved of visitors remain vibrant living places. In Pienza, for example, the family who own the Antica Locanda will welcome you to a fifteenth-century palazzo that was once the home of the Pope’s secretary, and will point out to you their favourite trattoria into the bargain!

Our walks follow local roads, fields and vineyards so we lead you through countryside where you will get a real feel for the terrain, agriculture and way of life of rural Tuscany. And as you are walking independently rather than in a large group, you have the comfort of knowing that you are not overloading a sensitive environment and causing damage to the ecosystem. Instead, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the countryside as you pass through it on foot.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
