the amazing things you'll be doing
Adventure into the heart of central Tuscany - a landscape characterised by remote villages, scattered cypress trees, undulating vineyards and aromatic olive groves. Its gently rolling hills are strikingly familiar from the classical backdrops of Renaissance art, and its charm is immutable - the perfect merging of medieval and modern worlds. The route traverses ancient paths and dirt tracks, past Tuscan farms and forests, culminating in the magnificent city of Siena. Experience the essence of this glorious region on foot.
day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | Certaldo. Known for its ties to poet Giovanni Boccaccio, Certaldo features a medieval upper city surrounded by fortifications. |
| Days 2-3: | San Gimignano. Wander the narrow stone streets to appreciate the architecture, walk the walls for far-reaching views or just soak up the atmosphere at a pavement cafe. |
| Day 4: | San Gimignano to Colle di Val d'Elsa. Hike through woods and fields to the quaint town of Colle di Val d'Elsa, it's modern lower town and historic upper town. |
| Day 5: | Colle di Val d'Elsa to Monteriggioni. There are plenty of photo opportunities on the walk to Monteriggioni. This historic village is encircled by huge walls and 14 impressive towers. |
| Days 6-8: | Monteriggioni to Siena. Wander through vineyards and olive groves to the beautiful city of Siena. Enjoy a day of well-deserved rest or take an optional city walk to discover its history and culture. |

how this holiday makes a difference
|
This trip takes you through the quintessential heart of the Tuscan countryside but it eschews the fancy villas and swimming pools and black-jacketed waiters in favour of a smaller, more homely and grass-roots experience. We use small local bed and breakfasts and affittacamere, which are often overlooked by travel companies due to their small size and low profile. The owners of these places are local and the money goes directly into their families; no chain hotels or syndicates, just very individual historic and charming accommodation. This way, we ensure that ordinary local people share in the benefits of tourism in Tuscany, rather than just suffering it as an intrusion.
You will also stay in historic houses which are integral parts of the lovely old towns you visit and not modern purpose-built hotels. This in itself benefits the local environment, and it ensures that those medieval towns and cities which are so beloved of visitors remain vibrant living places. Our walks follow local roads, fields and vineyards so we lead you through countryside where you will get a real feel for the terrain, agriculture and way of life of rural Tuscany. And as you are walking independently rather than in a large group, you have the comfort of knowing that you are not overloading a sensitive environment and causing damage to the ecosystem. Instead, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the countryside as you pass through it on foot. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
