introduction to Nile cruise by Dahabyia, Egypt
This Nile Cruise offers you the opportunity to sail the Nile in style on a traditional Dahabiya. A Dahabiya was a sailing ship built in the beginning of the 20th century for the aristocrats as a leisure boat to go for shorter or longer tours on the Nile. Sometimes they were used just to get out on the river and get some breeze on a hot summer evening and other times to travel the Nile in style. The famous Nile explorers did it, Agatha Christie did it and now it is your turn to do the same.
The SS Hadeel (45 x 7.5 m) has 3 decks. Lounge, bar and dining room are taking up the entrance of the boat and below (but above the water line) you will find the 8 cabins with private bathrooms. On the 2 outer decks there are deck chairs, comfortable sofas and you choose your place in the sun or the shadow. A small Jacuzzi is available on the sun deck.
In your cabin (11m2) there are 2 beds, wardrobe, safe, mini-bar, television and a large window. The bathroom (ca 2 m2) has a small shower cabin, wash basin, bathroom cabinet, toilet and hair dryer. The whole ship is decorated in a beautiful arabesque style with modern elements. Hadeel has two large sails, traditional style, and the wind will take her from one sight to another. This trip will give you a truly unforgettable, classical cruise along the Nile.
This trip offers not only the famous Pharonic sites along the Nile, but also the opportunity to observe its landscape at a slow pace and get close to its people.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
As a Responsible Tour operator we have a commitment to employ local people as leaders and staff wherever possible. Not only does this policy mean the best possible holiday experience for our clients, it provides a career path for our leaders and staff and ensures the benefits remain in the local community. The Hadeel is fully Egyptian owned and employs a full staff of Egyptians.
The main advantage of travelling by Dahabyia over a conventional Nile cruise is that you will be in a small group minimising crowding and waste production. There is no motor on board hence no fume and air pollution issues associated with the traditional large liners. The boat is equipped with its own water purification system and does not discharge waste into the river as well as minimising the consumption of plastic water bottles. For all of our tours we provide customers with an itinerary specific responsible travel guide aprox 4 weeks before they depart. This includes a generic travellers code of conduct which emphasises basic responsible travel advice – e.g. reduction of waste and consumption of natural resources, purchase local produce where possible etc. Our holidays are specifically designed to bring guests into direct contact with locals from a range of different tribes and cultures across Africa. We also therefore provide destination specific guidance including advice on local customs and some key phrases in certain languages (e.g. Swahili). We also offer guidance on how to barter responsibly for local curios and what curios should be avoided (e.g. certain wildlife artefacts such as coral, turtle shells etc.). As all of our guides and groundhandlers are local we also give guidance on what a fair and reasonable level of tipping would be at the end of the holiday. We support the work of Tourism Concern both in distributing their advice to customers and as an active participant in the Ethical Tour Operators Group. Our managing director sits on this group and is a regular attendee of meetings contributing to work towards developing industry wide fair trade standards. We also distribute materials to customers and make periodic donations for the following charities: Tree Aid; International Fund for Wildlife and Survival International Trust. In Southern Africa we support the Southern Africa Sustainable Seafood Initiative and forward their guidance to all customers on which seafood is sustainable when offered a choice at restaurants. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
