introduction to Community work with children in Tanzania

Enthusiastic? Energetic? Enjoy working with children? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to the above, then this placement in Moshi could offer the ideal adventure for you. With a variety of projects on offer, you could work with orphans, street children, or with youngsters whose parents simply cannot afford to care for them. Practical skills such as counselling, sports coaching and health advice are welcomed, but as long as you have the get-up-and-go to care for these youngsters, you could make an enormous difference to their lives.

All too often parents cannot afford to take care of their children, especially if they are faced with a combination of poverty and HIV/AIDS. This is the reason why there are so many street children and orphans in Africa. By assisting at these projects you are helping to educate and entertain children who may not otherwise have received any care whatsoever.

What you can give to Tanzania
Initiative, enthusiasm and patience will be essential characteristics for any volunteer embarking on this placement. You will need to understand the key aims of your placement as a focal point for the broader community and be aware of the long term goals in order to appreciate the hands on work that this project will require. Any specific skills that you can contribute, such as AIDS/HIV awareness as well as environmental issues, community health advice, counselling and sports coaching wil be appreciated. Volunteers will need to be pro-active in instigating activities that they particularly want to get up and running as supervision and leadership may be fairly minimal.

Your role at the centre will be to provide a range of skills and activities, depending on your experience. There will invariably be an element of teaching, to children and adults. The role could include activities in nurseries, childrens homes, with children with disabilities and also raising HIV/AIDS awareness.

About Moshi
Moshi is the closest town to Mount Kilimanjaro in the north of Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border. The town has a range of facilities including internet cafes, ATM machines, banks and other shops and restaurants. It is also the start for most treks up Mount Kili and for other safaris and tours.

traveller reviews for Community work with children in Tanzania

I feel I helped both the children on my project enjoy themselves, and also give the carers a break, having a knock-on effect on the children. Overall it was an amazing experience. I think everyone should do this at least once as it's a real eye-opener. (more)
how this holiday makes a difference
Tanzania is a great country to visit and indeed it receives thousands of people each year come to marvel at the country’s vast game reserves, snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro and the Masai herdsmen. However, how many of these are able to return home knowing that they’ve really made a difference to the local people?

All too often parents cannot afford to take care of their children, especially if they are faced with a combination of poverty and HIV/AIDS. This is the reason why there are so many street children and orphans in Africa.

There are a number of projects in the Moshi area that need your assistance. Projects vary from children with disabilities, children whose parents cannot afford to care for them, street children and orphans. Lack of education, culture and poverty create a combination of problems that face the youth of Tanzania. The projects within this project aim to help Tanzania’s future – its children through care, education, counselling and entertainment. By assisting at these projects you are helping to educate and entertain children who may not otherwise have received any care whatsoever.

Your role at the centre will be to provide a range of skills and activities, depending on your experience. There will invariably be an element of teaching, to children and adults. The role could include activities in nurseries, children’s homes, with children with disabilities and also raising HIV/AIDS awareness.

Through this project you have the ability to make a tangible and long lasting contribution to the lives of the children who will grow up and steer Tanzania’s future. Poverty may be deep rooted in Tanzania but with the commitment of willing volunteers working in partnership with local people it is escapable.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
