the amazing things you'll be doing
Widely neglected by foreign travellers, Uganda is one of the world's less well known treasures and this tour will put you in the perfect position to explore it. You'll begin your adventure at the Bujagali Falls in Jinja where you will try your hand at a spot of whitewater rafting. Then its on to the legendary Queen Elizabeth National Park which despite the ravaging of long-past civil wars and foreign poachers is still home to an array of indigenous wildlife. The Kasinga channel which runs between the parks two beautiful lakes is said to hold the largest concentration of hippos in the world and is certainly a sight to be seen!
Then you're off to the Teach Inn Uganda project in Nyakasiru, where you will help to give local children the skills they need to build a brighter future. Most of the children in Nyakasiru don't go to school; they work in the fields because their parents cant afford to pay the school fees. Teach Inn Uganda is a completely non-profit project that aims to give these children a proper education while providing a steady income for the village. You will be teaching at the village school and staying at the unique Teach Inn Uganda which was specifically built to house volunteer teachers and to help fund future projects that will benefit the local community.
This is a really worthwhile project that will make a huge and lasting difference to the lives of people in this poor rural area. Finally you will have a chance to explore the natural paradise that is the Ssese Islands. Untouched by the devastation of Uganda's troubled past, these beautiful islands give a rare glimpse of the country as it once was and hopefully will soon be again.

They are aged between 4-15 years old and divided into classes from 25 up to as many as 50 or 60! |

The village school in Niyakasiru cannot afford to pay teachers good salaries and this means that recruiting and retaining staff is extremely difficult. Many of the permanent teachers at the school have to undertake a second job and this means that their hours at the school are sporadic and unpredictable. The school is extremely under-resourced and classes can have as many 60 students. This significantly lowers the standard of teaching and the students inevitably suffer from it.
This project will help to ensure that there is a constant flow of volunteers going to the school so that the children will receive the standard of education that they deserve. Not only will you be helping these children to develop skills that will allow them to build a brighter future, but you will also be helping to provide the local community with a steady income through your stay at the “Teach INN Uganda”. All money raised by the hotel will be ploughed straight back into local projects. By getting involved with Teach Inn Uganda, you know that your contributions will make a lasting impact on the community. The other parts of the tour will also provide much needed income for locally run hotels, guesthouses, travel companies and communities. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
