the amazing things you'll be doing
The Nomads Trail: Izzyk Kul to Son Kul (14 days)
An integral part of the Old Silk Road, poets, pilgrims, warriors and traders have been riding across the spectacular Tien Shan, ‘Celestial’ Mountains, of Kyrgyzstan for 1000s of years.
Few places on earth can claim such a fine tradition of horsemanship, or a life so orientated around the horse, and our own local horsemen will guide you through the verdant, flower-filled valleys, across the wide open steppe lands and over the high mountain passes. And our horses you will ride are wonderful; not Mongolian steppe ponies but beautiful and more lithe part-Ahkal Tek animals with exceptional stamina.
Though we will provide excellent food, fine drink and a comfortable camp at night, there are few luxuries out here in the mountains. But what you will witness in these breathtaking hills, with the unspoilt nomadic people who live among them will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression upon you. For anyone with an equine bent, a horse trek through the Mountains of Heaven is simply unmissable.
Ride the Mountains of Heaven (14 days)
For our second Kyrgyz horse trek of the year we will be running our classic route from the Shamshy Valley, outside Bishkek, into the Alatau Mountain Range and on to Lake Son Kul.
For five days you will ride up through the stunning mountain wilderness with nothing but the clear blue skies, wild flowers, eagles and a few stray nomads for company. Once again your backup team with be fully equipped to provide an excellent standard of camp life and security and your horses will make for an excellent ride.
After a whole day enjoying the pristine natural beauty of Son Kul you will transfer to Bokonbaevo where you will spend three days riding with our eagle hunter friend. As the least demanding of our Kyrgyz horse trips this is a cracking itinerary.
Dunwoody Rides Again – Talas to Sari Chelek (14 days)
For our third Kyrgyz horse trek of the year we are concentrating on the more westerly region of the spectacular Tien Shan, Celestial Mountains, and the area around Sari Chelek National Park. As with the east here you will find life dominated by the horse, and our own local horsemen will guide you through the verdant, flower-filled valleys, across the wide open steppe lands and over the high mountain passes. But with the pristine pine forests, the series of sapphire-blue lakes and giant canyons that make up this region, here you will witness a different mountain experience.

Jeeps that bring all our equipment including personal items, tents, food and drink support all horse treks. We will have helpers to look after the horses and set up camp, leaving you free to relax. And we also have excellent cooks to prepare wonderful meals.

what this trip includes
Trips are on full board basis, and include international flights if mentioned in the price details, transport as outlined in itinerary, twin-share accommodation, mineral water and entrance fees. how this holiday makes a difference
In Central Asia we have developed unique relationships with many of the semi-nomadic peoples of the region and through our form of interactive, socially conscience tourism have helped them adapt to the modern, changing world by providing important income opportunities. With Sogan Bai, an eagle hunter from the shores of Lake Issyk Kul, or Noorgul, a shepherdess from the pristine Son Kul, or Nazira and her family at Tash Rabat, we have been responsible for introducing them to the homestay market, helping them to provide good, clean and interesting accommodation which in term allows them to educate their children, improve their standard of living and look after their ill.The wonderful thing about this kind of interactive tourism is that everyone gains – the nomads financially and us with the wonderful welcome and experience they give us. On our horse treks, we work exclusively with the fine horse-man Anar Bek, who along with his family and members of the local community, ensure that the horses we trek with are well treated, well fed and well looked after. Wherever possible we stay in locally owned accommodation, eat in locally owned establishments and purchase supplies from the local nomads. When you take one of our trips, we make a contribution to “Climate Care” – an organisation devoted to ‘offsetting’ or ‘neutralising’ harmful greenhouse gas emissions caused by your flight. This is done by funding projects across the world that will reduce greenhouse gases on your behalf through sustainable energy or rainforest restoration. We also support several NGOs around the world, all carefully selected to improve the standard of living for the communities we visit. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
