the amazing things you'll be doing
Help to protect the tiny communities in one of the few remaining areas of Primary Coastal Atlantic Rainforest.

Work with the local people to foster sustainable development and guarantee the future survival of the forest and its communities. Centuries of unsustainable development have reduced the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest to less than 7% of its original size. Flora, fauna and the local communities that depend on a healthy forest face a critical fight for survival. Located off the Brazilian coastline, amongst an archipelago of 26 islands, is the small community of Cairu. The island and those surrounding it are key areas of biodiversity with 430 kms of mangroves, Atlantic Rainforest and pristine white sandy beaches.

You are invited to join local groups in the community and help increase awareness environmental issues and the importance of living in a sustainable way. The golden beaches and rich emerald green forests of this region can't fail to charm you, but the real beauty of this project is the unforgettable warmth and friendship of the local communities.

a day in the life of a volunteer
Volunteers will focus on a number of areas including nursery work and replanting of trees indigenous to the region, construction of a floating research centre and development of facilities for poor communities in the area. You’ll work directly with a local theatre group to develop a performance with a social and environmental message, you’ll join the community to learn the dance-like martial art of Capoeira, help to develop artisan products made from natural products and teach English to keen students.

Cairu "land of the sun" is an island paradise located off the Bahian coast of Brazil and lies within one of the few remaining fragments of Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest.

Your team size will be between 8-16 people and the age range is mixed. Regardless of age, all volunteers have one thing in common – an enthusiasm to experience the real South America, spend time with communities in rural Brazil and to make a positive impact on the local children and families in Cairu.

Since 2004, the Awards has recognised individuals, companies and organisations in travel making a big commitment to the culture and economies of local communities and helping to conserve biodiversity.
how this holiday makes a difference
All of our conservation and development projects have been carefully selected to provide the maximum positive impact on the communities and environments where we work. Long term partnerships with grassroots organisations, built to create short, medium and long term goals for each project guarantee that every team makes a lasting difference. Working with the coastal communities of Brazil is intrinsic to conserving the Atlantic Rainforest. Nowhere is conservation and development more closely tied than here in the last fragments of forest.

Beach, rainforest conservation in BrazilThe cultural awareness and insight that can be gained here through planting trees, piping water and playing Capoeira, with the local communities is unique.

This relationship is inspiring and empowering local people to achieve what they could only have dreamed of years ago.

Through paid local project co-ordinators, who source food, materials and labour locally while adhering to strict environmental and ethical policies, we guarantee that together we will make a real and positive difference that you will see with your own eyes.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
