the amazing things you'll be doing
This trip offers you a taste of everything - beach, trekking, canoeing, conservation, culture and leisure all in one!
The natural beauty of Florianópolis attract thousands of visitors every year. In the Summer months Brazilian and South American tourists flock to the coast & the beaches, a paradise for surfing, windsurfing, sailing and fishing lovers alike.
The River Otter Project is found in this region. Biologists, researchers, scientists and volunteers have been working in the Peri Lagoon in order to better understand the life and customs of one of its precious inhabitants - the River Otter.
The River Otter Project: The protection and conservation of the River Otter has been difficult in the past few years due to the popularity of Floripa as a gateway for young adults looking for fun holidays. The overdevelopment of the city has been threatening the local fauna with the destruction of its habitats. During this trip you will be taken to see the River Otter Project, to raise the awareness of tourists and help the local fishing community understand that the protection of the land and animals could bring them good revenue. For one morning, each traveller will have the opportunity to help with basic tasks such as data collection which will vary according to weather conditions & the needs of the researchers. 1-2% of the total trip cost is re-directed to the River Otter Project.
Note: Prices will be requoted according to number of travellers & season. Price includes transfers between Florianópolis & accommodation, accommodation, meals & snacks per itinerary, guided tours, boat trips and a visit to River Otter Research Project.
The itinerary can be easily modified to suit your personal requirements. Please contact us for details

how this holiday makes a difference
The idea of this trip is to bring awareness to this region of Brazil. Accommodation is in locally owned pousadas/inns and you will have the chance to savour the local cuisine (fish!). Travellers will be given suggestions to try smaller restaurants in order to promote local establishments and start up businesses. Travellers will be visiting small villages and making contact with locals, in order to better understand local culture and life. Trips are guided by local biologist and as far as possible are conducted on foot in order to minimize negative impact of transport. Each traveller will be asked to care for their personal garbage and carry it back to the inn where it can be properly disposed. Vehicles will only be used when there is a need to cover large distances by road. In the face of ongoing urbanisation and destruction of habitats, travellers are involved with the River Otter Project to help raise the awareness of the importance of conserving the otter in terms of potential revenue for the local community. 1-2% of the trip cost is re-directed to the project. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
