the amazing things you'll be doing
When Columbus landed at Limon on the Caribbean coast on his fourth and final voyage to the Americas, he could only guess at what beauty the interior possessed. With long sandy beaches, towering volcanoes and unspoilt tropical rainforest, Costa Rica is an adventurer's paradise - the habitat of sloth, monkey, tree frog and many other creatures, including some 800 species of bird.
Poas Volcano & Guayabo ruins: Arriving in San Jose, we visit the towering Poas volcano - its smouldering crater surrounded by tropical forest where humming birds can be seen hovering among wild orchids.
Later we learn about Central America's amazing reptiles at a serpentarium, and visit Costa Rica's most important archaeological site: the Indian ceremonial centre at Guayabo.
Tortuguero National Park: At Turrialba there's a chance to enjoy some whitewater rafting, before we make our way into the forests and swamps of Tortuguero National Park. Boarding our riverboat, we'll enter a network of jungle waterways, where we can hear the cry of howler monkeys and spot brightly coloured parrots among the tangled vegetation.
Monteverde & Pacific Coast: Arenal, a volcanic cone that regularly spews out lava and steam, is our next stop. We then climb into the cloud forest of Monteverde Reserve, where some 2,500 species of rare plants are found, and we can also enjoy some spectacular bird watching, perhaps spotting the resplendent quetzal or even the unusual bare-necked umbrella bird. Finally we head to Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific coast. You can soak up the variety of flora and wildlife or just relax on miles of beach, where monkeys and iguanas often wander down to the sand.
Group size is approx. 12 to 18.
Travel is by bus, riverboat & on foot.
Swimming: Most hotels have pools, there will also be an opportunity to swim in the Pacific and several rivers.

how this holiday makes a difference
We consider it very important to give our support to the countries that we visit, which we do, particularly in Costa Rica in a number of ways. We support the Caribbean Conservation Corps in Tortuguero National Park which contributes to conservation in the Turtle laying area of Costa Ricas coast, and encouraging people to help clean up the beach where turtles lay their eggs. Proceeds from the entry fees to Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve help to protect the highly endangered habitat of the Resplendant Quetzal, of which only 300 pairs remain in the world. We also use a locally owned agent, suppliers, hotels and restaurants. We try to ensure that we have minimum impact on the flora and fauna that we see when we are exploring, so that their lives and surroundings are not affected. Our Tour Leaders are all trained by us in the importance of responsible tourism with guidance given on how they can make a difference. This then percolates down through those they deal with. As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, Hope Worldwide and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism, such as Tourism Concern, The Travel Foundation and AITO. Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and we have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. Carbon offsets for all flights booked with us are included in the tour cost. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
