the amazing things you'll be doing
This trip will appeal to travellers who still want to see the history of this fascinating country but wish to stay off the well worn tourist trail in Egypt. At the start of the trip you have the opportunity to visit the Pyramids near Cairo and the Egypt museum. The museum houses amongst many other antiquities the unbelievably beautiful treasures of Tutankhamun’s tomb, which for many people is the highlight of their trip to Cairo.

You will stay at the locally owned Windsor Hotel with its colonial décor and long history which attracted Michael Palin during his “Around the world in 80 days” series for the BBC. After this we will take you into the desert north of Cairo where you can spend time with the local Bedouin and overnight camping under the desert stars. As well as wind sculpted rock formations and cliffs there are corals and fossils in abundance dating back millions of years. You can walk or take a camel ride around the oasis and discover the tombs of the golden mummies which were discovered only as recently at 1996.

how this holiday makes a difference
The owners of Hot Springs hotel in Bahariya have encouraged a Japanese NGO to set up ‘The Womens Workhouse’. Here orphaned beduoin girls are encouraged to learn professions to be able to survive also without husbands of fathers. They also learn the old handicrafts of Bahariya Oasis and prepare them as gifts to be sold to tourists.

The German manager of the hotel, Peter Wirth, has lived and worked in Bahariya Oasis since 1995, and was instrumental in the creation of the, NGO “El Hayat”, which has the preservation of the environment of the White Desert Protected Area as its main goal. Every year volunteer clean-up trips in the desert are executed. On the initiative of Mr. Wirth a Bedouin Driver training programme has been executed to allow the local to safely transport tourists and help manage the Western Desert environment.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
