the amazing things you'll be doing
Over 15 days this expedition will penetrate deep into the African bush in the truly immense Selous Game Reserve. For the first week we will explore on foot – by far the most exciting and rewarding safari experience.
Guided by our knowledgeable and professional team, we will witness the bountiful wildlife and enjoy splendid wilderness camps.
Upon reaching the Rufiji river and our permanent luxurious safari camp we will explore the surrounding rivers, lakes and forest by four wheel drive vehicles and boats.
After we leave the interior we shall drive east to the coast and down to the island of Kilwa Kisiwani where we will see the ancient ruins, swim at quiet sandy beaches, dive or snorkel the coral gardens or simply relax at our unique resort.
Expedition highlights include:
The Selous, home to 750,000 mammals, is considered by safari connoisseurs to be one of the finest reserves for viewing game, not least because of the very few other guests whilst on safari; the amount of visitors to the reserve is severely limited by the relatively small number of camps within the boundaries of the park and the sheer immensity of the area - equivalent to the size of Switzerland.
Walking safaris are the most rewarding and unobtrusive way to observe the surrounding wildlife. We shall follow spoor, detect the unusual insects, hear the sounds of beasts and birds, notice the indigenous fauna and sight magnificent mammals from ground level. Always under the protection of an armed ranger and with the benefit of a local crew added to the unparalleled experience of camping in the bush, this is a thrilling, inspiring and magical expedition.
We expect to see lions, elephants, giraffe, hippopotamus, zebra, crocodiles, wildebeest, warthog, buffalo, kudu, impala, hyena, baboon, colobus and vervet monkeys, plus a myriad of bird life. We also hope to see leopards, cheetah and African wild dogs and many of the other numerous African animals found in the Selous.

tailor made holiday
This trip can be tailormade to create a unique holiday for your individual requirements by travel experts with intimate knowledge of the destination. It is a more luxurious trip that will suit those who enjoy immersing themselves in new cultures and environments before relaxing in comfort in some of the best and most characterful local accommodation! Quality and value are the hallmark of these trips.how this holiday makes a difference
Most of our time is spent in the Selous Game reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich and diverse eco system with over 750,000 mammals. The reserve authorities have understood that to avoid conflicts with locals, who naturally want to hunt in the region, they must involve the villagers and allow them to gain from the conservation process. Consequently a Community Wildlife Management Programme has been established whereby villagers agree to create wildlife management areas on their land in return for a sustainable hunting quota. The system has proved its worth with over 50 villages participating. We employ local tour operator Fran Marty who you may well get to meet. Employing local guides and operators means that not only will we have the best and most knowledgeable people for the job, but we are also supporting the local economy. Additionally we can gain a real insight into Tanzanian culture by spending time with these guides. We treat every person associated with this trip with equal respect and expect clients to do the same. The staff at our safari lodge are mainly from a nearby village and produce is purchased locally (where available) or in town from local businesses. When fly camping, we employ responsible and environmentally friendly campsite procedures on which your expedition leader will brief you before you depart. By camping we have an absolute minimum impact on the environment. We take only photographs and great experiences and leave only laughter and happy memories. To greatly reduce our impact on the environment there will be a maximum of ten team members and the itinerary is a one-off so will not be repeated. This helps to minimise the damage associated with large scale tourism. The Selous Game Reserve is run chiefly by the income tourism brings, without the money we give to the reserve, it may not be possible for them to continue preserving and protecting the wildlife – some of which is endangered. The majority of transportation is by public transport and on foot, one of the best and most unobtrusive ways to view wildlife. You will be issued with instructions as to how you can help to preserve the environment and we hope that you will follow our advice to help make a difference |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
