introduction to Horse riding in Ecuador
Our horse rides in Ecuador offer breathtaking scenery through volcano lined valleys. Our English local partner, Sally Vergette, has been leading horse riding tours in Ecuador since 1996. The tours have been featured in major publications and are highly recommended in the major guide books.
From the farm, home of Sally’s horses, in the foothills of snow-capped Antisana volcano just outside Quito, we offer a range of short riding tours for riders of all levels of ability and experience. Longer rides, set date departure rides and rides between luxurious historic haciendas are also available. There is something for everyone - families, small groups, singles and couples!
Price inclusions: Horses, guide, grooms, all meals, accommodation, park fees, transfers, transport of bags and taxes.
See below for details of our group departures. Please contact us for details of our private tailormade tours.
This trip runs every 4 - 8 weeks, with a special cattle round up departure in November
This ride takes you through some of Ecuador's most stunning high altitude scenery, below the icy glaciers of conical, snow-capped Cotopaxi, one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Our ride allows us to experience the diverse highland landscapes, flora and fauna, and indigenous communities of this fascinating, compact Andean country. The pace is also varied, from steadily crossing wetlands to cantering across the vast plains of the altiplano. Nights are spent in a wonderful mixture of haciendas, farmhouses and highland lodges. You will need a sleeping bag (we have some available for rent).

how this holiday makes a difference
|
We have several Ecuadorian full time staff on contracts, with all the usual benefits (holidays, health insurance etc.) They also receive extra benefits such as above average working conditions (good treatment, respect and a place to stay if needed) and above average wages - our staff are paid 50% above average if contracted in on a daily basis.) Workers that are sick get special medical attention from our own doctor too.
We arrange free clinics for chagras (gauchos) on horse care and health. The horses are in excellent condition, and receive regular visits from vets. Sally is an experienced British horsewoman and personally keeps a close eye on them all year round. They are exercised daily to keep them fit and more so to prepare them for a trek and are monitored carefully for any problems. On tour our policy is to be as low impact as possible on the environment - we always take great care where we ride, never leaving rubbish, not polluting local water sources and not starting fires. Haciendas are all owner managed and employ local staff so money goes straight into the local economy. Some of our haciendas are very aware of ecological issue and others are not so aware so we are trying to influence them, without being overbearing. We also support, through donations of money, clothing and medicines, an orphanage and old peoples home in Quito. We also assist a doctor who treats patients that do not have the means of paying for medicines. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
