the amazing things you'll be doing
Tripoli & Sabratha:
We start in Tripoli, whose old town was built on the ancient site of Oea. With its exotic mix of Levantine, Italian and North African influences, Tripoli is a city whose long history is in evidence at every turn. We take a walk into the medina at the heart of the old town, then visit the excellent museum, housed in a castle that was once HQ for Arabs, the Knights of Malta, Ottomans and Italians. Later we visit Sabratha, an ancient Carthaginian trading post. The theatre here is vast and imposing: the largest in Roman Africa.
Leptis Magna:
The third - and easily the most impressive - city of ancient Tripolitania is Leptis Magna. We enjoy the best part of two full days at this magnificent site, considered to be one of the best preserved Roman cities anywhere. We explore on foot, the only way to appreciate fully the sheer scale and grandeur of Leptis Magna. No trouble or expense was spared in constructing North Africa's most famous city: pink granite columns were shipped from southern Egypt, while sculptors were brought from Pergamum to work on the finest Italian marble. Today the sprawling site is a deeply evocative place: looking out across the ruins to the blue waters of the Mediterranean it is easy to imagine the thriving scene of 2,000 years ago.

Learning about the country we are travelling to is really important on our tours and on a short trip we want to show people as much of Libya as we can. One of the reasons we prefer to use local tour leaders where possible is they can give a real insight into the culture; anything from learning about the education system, to making sure we don’t fall foul of any taboos! Secondly it is our policy to generate business and employment opportunities in the countries we travel to by employing local people. All our leaders in Libya are locals and we’ve personally trained them all too so they are comfortable in their work and you get great service. Importantly they are trained in responsible tourism issues and the importance of
You may only be going away for a few days on this trip, yet the income generated through staying in local hotels and eating at a variety of local restaurants all helps contribute to the local economy. Add to that that all our tours work to a strict Responsible Tourism Policy and you can be sure that we’ve considered every aspect of our operation in Libya and are confident it is best practice. As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, Hope Worldwide and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism, such as Tourism Concern, The Travel Foundation and AITO. Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and we have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. Carbon offsets for all flights booked with us are included in the tour cost. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
