the amazing things you'll be doing
This is a demanding yet rewarding placement for those who want to care for abandoned or sick children. We can offer you the chance to help in a variety of children's institutions in Brasov, including two orphanages and a children's hospice. You need to be warm hearted (and capable of being hugged incessantly) as well as having bags of patience and lots of energy. Brasov, with its beautiful architecture and scenery, is also a great place to experience the more positive sides of Romanian life.

The placements are in and around Brasov, a beautiful city surrounded by wooded mountains. It has a lovely square, fine historical buildings, bars, lively nightlife and is close to Count Dracula’s castle and a skiing area. Romania has stunning scenery, including mountains, forests and the Black Sea coastline.

It is a poor country that has struggled to find its way since the fall of communism a decade ago. However, few Romanians look back to the days of Communism with any enthusiasm and are determined that their country should move forward.
a day in the life of a volunteer
You can decide to work in orphanages, with sick or vulnerable children or in state nurseries. Wherever you work, you will get involved with the basic routines (mealtimes, bedtimes etc) but also provide the cuddles, fun and attention that the staff are often too hard-pressed to give. Many of our volunteers choose to combine several different projects. Working in more than one location adds variety and can be less draining. We currently have volunteers working in Art Therapy at the children’s hospital, a children’s hospice and with teenagers in an orphanage.

You will be based in Brasov living in a comfortable, central flat that we will rent for you and your fellow volunteers. Please expect to share a room. You can go out or cook for yourself in the evening. We believe that living in relative comfort is important and should help you unwind when you are working hard.
how this holiday makes a difference
All projects have been selected to benefit local people. We encourage all our volunteers to live in harmony with the local culture, to contribute their time and effort to projects and to make a real contribution to the vulnerable people of Romania. By working and living locally participants will become immersed in the country and will live in a way that is harmonious with the culture and environment. You will be living is a warm and comfortable flat with other volunteers. The accommodation is locally owned and any food provided is locally sourced and cooked by locals.

Volunteers are needed in Brasov as it is a mix of wealth and poverty. Due to past government leadership he rate of unwanted pregnancies is extremely high leaving the country with an excessive amount of orphans. The country is not wealthy and its basic infrastructure means that volunteers willing to help with child care are in great demand. Past volunteers have been a real asset to the community by providing valuable care, support and friendships to the young Romanians. The placements are in orphanages whilst others are with state nurseries. Wherever you work you will get involved in the basic routines, but also provide the cuddles, fun and attention that the staff are often too hard pressed to give.

Our volunteers are given a pre departure briefing where they are encouraged to minimise waste and to live in a way that will not have a detrimental effect on the country or communities. There is a special session entitled ‘Responsible tourism’ where we discuss cultural differences and sensitivities as well as advising volunteers on appropriate conduct. People are given a Romanian language course and briefed on what is considered polite in terms of eating, greeting and dressing.

The visitor will learn more about real Romanian life as lived by ordinary people in a variety of areas and know Romania in its real perspective compared to what is depicted in the International News. The duration of the visit means that a real bond can be made with locals rather than just a tourist-host relationship. A percentage of the cost of the placement will go to the local projects. The group size of volunteers is small so that the cultural impact is minimal and there is more integration with the society. Our company is an environmentally responsible one that operates recycling and reusing of waste products. We also offset carbon emissions in our office (gas, electricity, business mileage).

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
