the amazing things you'll be doing
Family travel is a wonderful way for all generations to connect and share good times; private custom travel allows both small and extended families to travel together. We feature special family trips designed to please the wide-ranging interests and attention spans of both younger children and well-seasoned adults.

By weaving hands-on activities into an itinerary that includes some of the best of Chinese history, culture, and landscapes—the Terracotta Warriors, the Great Wall, pandas, and China’s minority cultures—it will be a unique, fun, and memorable experience. Whether it is a family-style cooking class, a hike on the great wall, a calligraphy lesson, or paying a visit to some pandas, these activities are sure to delight everyone on the trip!

Educational and hands-on programs with families in mind:
  • Beijing: Cooking Class, Kite Making, visit to a local farmer’s house
  • Xi’an: Learn the art of traditional Chinese calligraphy
  • Jiuzhaigou: Visits to: Tibetan family, Qiang Stockaded village
  • Wolong Nature Reserve: Panda habitats
  • Chengdu: Panda Breeding Center and Wenshufang art and craft street

Best time to go: Because of its size, the climate in China can vary greatly from region to region. Autumn is generally the best time to visit all the places highlighted on this itinerary. Beijing and Xi’an are mild and comfortable, while Jiuzhaigou Valley’s vibrant fall colors are at their peak. The leaves and woods are reflected in the incredibly clear lakes, and the sky is bright and blue.

Please note: We are providing touring in China throughout the Olympics, but we do not have access to tickets for the Olympic events. These would have to be purchased by clients separately.

Please note: We do not offer spa and beach holidays.

how this holiday makes a difference
Travel in a sustainable way: We patronize and support small, family-run, locally-owned businesses: hotels, restaurants, shops, tour guides. We choose people who invest their creativity and resources in giving travelers simple, friendly, sustainable, and honest experiences--people with ideals. Both in our office and on our trips, we also take care to be environmentally responsible, and reduce waste as much as possible. To us traveling responsibly means consuming responsibly.

Calligraphy lessons, family holiday to China Travel responsibly: During family visits, we adhere to responsible practices respecting local cultures. When visiting nature reserves and during outdoor activities, we take the utmost care to not leave behind any negative traces of our presence.

Uniqueness of program: China opened its long-sequestered hinterlands back to the early days. We’ve found many new areas, and many new approaches to old areas, and we’re struck by the unending discoveries that China offers. We’ve got a bright bagful of ideas for Private Journeys, ranging from walking and trekking excursions to art and cultural appreciation-focused trips.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
