the amazing things you'll be doing
A great trip across the heart of the ancient Aztec and Mayan empires from Mexico City to the popular international resort of Cancún. You’ll be discovering all the major ruins along the way and have a chance to meet the friendly local people and, of course, view much of Mexico’s best mountain and lowland scenery.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1-4:Arrive Mexico City - Teotihuacán - Puebla - Oaxaca - Monte Albán. To the great ancient ruins of Teotihuacán dominated by a series of massive pyramids. We move on to the grand city of Puebla with a great plaza and red-roofed houses. We head to Oaxaca where there’s an afternoon to explore the colourful markets and colonial buildings of this beautiful city. The nearby Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán are also visited and feature a market plaza and many tombs
Day 5-7:Tehuantepec - Sumidero Canyon - San Cristóbal. We make our way via the ruins of Mitla (optional to visit), known as “The Place of the Dead” before arriving in the town of Tehuantepec for an overnight stop. We now enter the delightful Chiapas Highlands and stop for a speedboat trip up the Sumidero Canyon, over 1,000 metres deep. San Cristóbal is a beautiful colonial town with much to see and there are many attractive native Indian villages in the area to visit.
Day 8-10:Agua Azul - Palenque - Campeche. A scenic drive down the twisting highway to the lowland plains where we stop for a refreshing swim at Agua Azul falls. Palenque is nearby and we have a free day to explore these magnificent Mayan ruins in a jungle setting. On the coast is Campeche, an old walled city where there maybe a chance to see a sound and light show.
Day 11-12:Uxmal - Mérida. We travel to the Mayan ruins of Uxmal, famed for its worship of the rain god as it was the only city that relied purely on rainwater. To the magnificent colonial city of Mérida where the plaza is surrounded by archways, restaurants and great markets for souvenir shopping.
Day 13-14:Chichén Itzá - Cancún. The most famed Mayan site of all, Chichén Itzá, is a truly incredible complex with its ball court and massive temple pyramid. A last drive to Cancún, graced with beautiful beaches and great seafood restaurants to enjoy.
Day 15:Depart Cancun.
travellers' tales
Loved every minute of it! I couldn't narrow our experience down to one memorable or exciting part - we saw and experienced too much. (more)
small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.
how this holiday makes a difference
We are proud to support Tourism Concern, an organisation dedicated to minimising the negative impact of worldwide tourism. Tourism Concern works to raise awareness and implement change by involving both tourism organisations and host communities. We encourage passengers to learn some basic Spanish before they arrive so they can interact with the local people on a basic level and also as a sign of respect as visitors.

We use local operators and specialist guides on our tours throughout Mexico. This includes locally owned hotels, restaurants, agencies and guides for excursions. Our commitment to these local operators means we are constantly putting back into the community and ensuring these businesses continue to prosper. This also empowers local business operators leading to increased confidence and development of their products and services.

In the Caribbean, we also support the Caribbean Conservation Corporation & Sea Turtle Survival League. Since 2004 we have adopted a total of 7 Green Sea Turtles in conjunction with the Sea Turtle Survival League. Our support has provided additional funding for the league to establish sanctuaries and maintain habitat protection, continue scientific research and promote and educate others of the threat of extinction to Green Sea Turtles.

We have an extensive list of pre-departure documentation which includes maps, regional advice, responsible travel practices and detailed itineraries, and we send this out to our passengers well before their departure to ensure that when they travel they are socially conscious and respectful of their surrounding environments - both during our tours and before/after.

Office policy: We recognise that it is not only on-location staff who have environmental responsibilities but also our administration staff in our offices around the world. All our offices endeavour to be environmentally sound through practising energy conservation, implementing recycling plans and being responsible for the surrounding physical environment. We believe in leading through example and operate in this manner to encourage other businesses and individuals to be considerate of the environment and conserve the natural beauty we currently share.

Carbon Offset Scheme:

Working in partnership with international conservation charity World Land Trust in our continuing quest to establish and maintain our position as a leader in responsible travel, we are offering a new way for our travellers to make a real contribution to the health of the planet - the Carbon Offset Scheme.

World Land Trust is a not-for-profit, international conservation organisation that takes direct action to save rainforest and other biologically important lands. Since it was founded in 1989, it has helped local conservation organisations to purchase and protect over 375,000 acres of threatened habitats in Asia, Europe and Central and South America. There are many organisations offering carbon offsetting services, however we believe that World Land Trust has the most scientifically sound approach and socially responsible philosophy.

When you book your tour with us you will be able to offset a portion of your share of the carbon emissions created while you are on your tour. If you book your tour in the months of November and December 2008, we will match your contribution ‘dollar for dollar’. On top of that, from 01 Jan 2009, we will calculate what clients have donated, and donate an additional 10% of the total to World Land Trust. So the more you contribute, the more we can give! We will also absorb all processing fees associated with these payments, so there’s no administration cost to World Land Trust and they can spend the money donated where it counts - protecting threatened habitats worldwide.

What Will Happen to the Contributions?

World Land Trust will fund projects on your behalf through their Carbon Balanced programme, which reduces the amount of damage carbon emissions are doing to the environment. We will not profit from your carbon offsetting donations. Your contributions will be made directly to World Land Trust and we will not receive any direct financial benefit or commission from these donations.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
