introduction to Zambezi charity canoe & community project

Experience the journey of a lifetime, as you join this trip with a canoe safari and community challenge in Zambia. First, experience a five day waterborne safari, as you canoe down the Zambezi River, spotting wild game as you go! Then head north to Ndola, to help on a project to improve facilities at a school for disadvantaged children. Finally, you can opt to extend your trip to visit the breathtaking Victoria Falls – the planet’s largest curtain of water, considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.

Children, community project in ZambiaWorking at the Hands of Compassion Community Centre in the Chipulukusu Squatter township near Ndola, you will be working on a range of refurbishment and construction projects at this centre which provides essential care to children in an area ravaged by HIV/AIDS, poverty and malnutrition.

The Chipulukusu township is home to 60,000 people who have no official place of residence, and live in basic mud huts. The community centre and school offers education to 500 children – a great many of whom are orphans, having lost parents to HIV/AIDS. The centre also trains up local women to act as ‘guardians’ to the children, giving them life and employment skills. The school also has a skills training centre, where local youths are taught vocational skills, such as carpentry, thus ensuring they have more opportunities for the future.

a taste of volunteering trip - what's it all about?
Taste of volunteeringThis type of trip is ideal for people who are unable to take very long periods off work but who are interested in volunteering to work with communities in need, or in wildlife conservation. These shorter trips combine volunteering with an opportunity to see the main sights in destinations. Find out more about 'taste of volunteering'
how this holiday makes a difference
This tour offers you opportunities which few other holidays do. Instead of just ‘seeing’ Africa as a mere tourist, a spectator of sceneries and events happening to other people, this tour will provide you with the chance of actually getting involved with the refurbishment of a school for 500 AIDS orphans in Ndola, which will benefit the community in which you are staying, ensuring you a fuller and richer experience of life in Zambia.

Furthermore, all the hotels we use in Zambia are vetted to ensure they come up to our rigorous environmental sustainability standards (such as ensuring they have water conservation and recycling policies, and that they source as many products as possible locally), that the hotel workers benefit from ‘staff friendly’ employment practices,(such as the right to belong to trades union), and earn a fair wage for a fair days work. Therefore we can guarantee that the money you spend in these hotels directly benefits local people.

So, as well as seeing the stunning sights of the Lower Zambezi Valley, including probable sightings of, amongst others, elephant, hippo, crocodile, impala and lion, we offer you the opportunity to bring real benefit to orphans living in one of the country’s poorest communities.

Our time spent in Ndola will be spent helping the children who attend the Hands of Compassion School, a charity which provides education for disadvantaged children, the majority of whom are HIV orphans. Whether it’s picking up a paint brush, helping lay some bricks, or simply reading to the children and playing the odd game of football, you will leave a lasting imprint on their lives, and return home feeling rewarded at what you have achieved for disadvantaged children, and with a lifetime of memories from your experiences in Zambia. So, why not do something different – and make a difference!

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
