the amazing things you'll be doing
Spend 6 days and 5 nights in the Sahara, beginning and ending at Douz. Browse the local market before joining your guide, camels, and camel drivers to begin your Saharan Adventure. You will ride from Douz, through the high dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental, possibly meeting bands of nomadic Bedouin on the way.
You can sleep under the stars, or for those that prefer to be undercover, a Bedouin tent will be available each night. Cooking is by no means a woman’s responsibility. Bedouin men are excellent cooks, and the food is organic and natural, freshly prepared on an open fire in the traditional way. You will eat fresh fruit, salads tossed in oil and a variety of dishes made from meat, vegetables, pasta and spices, and of course, cous cous. Bread is freshly baked in the embers of the fire each day, and traditional tea and coffee are also available. Special dietary requirements can be catered for on request. Bottled spring water will be freely available.
Our treks are of moderate difficulty, allowing the combination of walking and camel riding as you choose. These treks can be made more strenuous for the more experienced and those into extreme sports. Trips can alternatively be completed in 4x4 vehicles; prices available on request. Children from the age of 3 can be safely accommodated on our 6-day treks, and for the young ones a special saddle can be constructed which will keep the child secure on the camel - even if they fall asleep.
6 days in the Sahara beginning and ending in Douz, during which you will cook, ride your camels through the Grand Erg Oriental and construct daytime shelters from the midday sun. Among the high dunes, you will pass dry oases and an abandoned Bedouin village, lost in the sands. Price depends on group size (1-4 people).

6 days in the Sahara beginning in Douz and ending in Ksar Ghilane. 65km trek to the small Bedouin village of Ksar Ghilane, travelling through a fast changing landscape of small dunes, high dunes, and temporary rivers and small lakes and seeing the ruins of an ancient palace. Price depends on group size (1-4 people).
Bedouin stay from £330 (6 days) based on 2 people sharing
A stay among the Bedouin can be arranged as part of another desert trek or independently, and you can choose to make the short journey to a desert camp of the Bedouin by camel or 4x4. Live with the Bedouin and share their way of life, helping with the goats, working in the camp - collecting wood or fetching water from the well, which you will learn to carry in the traditional way. Available from January to late May. Groups can be of any size and children are particularly welcome and will have Bedouin children for playmates. Prices are dependent on the size of the group, the length of stay and the chosen means of transport, and are available on request.

travellers' tales
Many parts were both memorable and exciting. Seeing desert all around you with no civilisation in sight; my children's reactions to riding a camel; watching the guide making desert bread; waking up in the beautiful clear light of a desert dawn... (more)

Our aim is to make the beauty and peace of the desert accessible to others, offer flexibility to the traveller and, provide a balance of adventure and safety.
Our policy is to support the local economy. We bring work to an area where employment opportunities are limited and ensures that the financial benefit remains within the local community. All guides / camel drivers are local men – their expert knowledge of the region essential give the nature of Saharan treks. We use local, family run services, such as hotels, restaurants and airport transfers. All products and provisions are purchased from local providers. We are not office based and do not generate paper in any form. We have no waste products to recycle. The desert environment places significant restrictions on water usage. We carry an adequate (but finite) supply of drinking water. Living the Bedouin lifestyle – every article has multiple functions, there is no waste and limited natural resources such as wood are used with care. We neither tolerate, nor leave, litter. We provide customers with advice on minimalising the impact on local culture and pre-trip information. Trekkers live the Bedouin life style, and learn something of their customs and cultures. We operate a fund to supplement medical care for the Bedouin. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
