introduction to Picos de Europa cycling vacation, Spain

This “hideaways” tour takes us on a remarkable journey through a remote, timeless and virtually unknown region of Northern Spain.

Never conquered by the Moors and seemingly untouched since the Middle Ages the Picos de Europa mountains lie only 15 kilometres from the sparkling beaches of the Bay of Biscay.

This is cycling paradise with lofty snow-capped mountains and magnificent stretches of beach all wrapped up in one unforgettable tour.

Our tour begins with a visit to the world famous Guggenheim Museum of modern art in Bilbao. Then, a couple of days pedalling along the Bay of Biscay before we head south, riding through the Picos rather than over them. We wend our way through breathtaking gorges carved between massive peaks by fast rivers full of trout and salmon.

Our tour also includes 2 days of walks along some of the Picos most magnificent paths and one morning spent canoeing along the Deva River. Accommodations include small quaint hotels, a manor house and a restored village in the woods.

Please note: This trip can also be tailormade as a 'self guided cycling vacation'
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Bilbao to Comillas. Morning pick up at hotel in Bilbao and it's on to the world famous Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art designed by American architect Frank Gehry. Shuttle to Comillas, by the coast. In the evening we'll toast the beginning of our tour with a special dinner at the fabulous restaurant designed by Antoni Gaudí, one of only three buildings outside of Catalonia designed by the architect.
Day 2:Comillas to Pechón (40km/25miles). We ride south today through quiet countryside amid centuries-old farmhouses and picturesque Cantabrian villages reminiscent of Austria’s Tyrol. Then, it’s back to the coast for a night along the sea before starting into the Picos de Europa. Our hotel is in the postcard perfect little village of Pechón overlooking the Bay of Biscay. We’ll enjoy a paella dinner together tonight.
Day 3:Pechón to Potes (43km/27miles). This morning we cycle for a short way before going on a guided canoe trip down the Río Deva. Then it’s back on our bikes and a glorious ride through the Hermida Gorge to the little town of Potes for two nights at the base of Spain’s most beautiful mountain range. We’ll be staying at a charming family run hotel overlooking the Deva River. Free evening to try one of the local restaurants.
Day 4:Potes (50km/31miles). Today we can either ride our bikes to the cable car at Fuente Dé (a stiff climb) or catch a lift in the van. We then take the breathtaking cable car to the top of the mountain for a great hike along mountain paths to a rustic lodge for lunch. The views are stupendous with lofty peaks in all directions - truly a walk to remember! Dinner tonight at the excellent little restaurant belonging to the hotel.
Day 5:Potes to Riaño (63km/39m). We start the day through an area of wild and rugged mountain terrain with heart-stopping views to reach the Puerto de San Glorio pass. After the pass it’s all downhill to Riaño and our lakeside hotel for the night. Dinner on our own at one of several restaurants in town.
Day 6:Riaño to Cangas de Onis (71km/44miles). This morning we ride north along the Sella River and down through one of the most spectacular gorges in the world. This is a 35km/22m easy downhill that doesn’t leave your hands paralyzed! The scenery is truly astounding. Overnight in Cangas de Onis at our hotel beside the medieval bridge. Dinner tonight at a wonderful local restaurant.
Day 7:Cangas de Onis to Alles (60km/37m). East toward Panes, we visit Covadonga - one of the holiest sites in Spain! From there, we’ll enjoy another fantastic all-day ride along another lovely gorge - to a country inn set in a restored mountain village. And for those wanting a change of mounts, there’ll even be time in the afternoon to go horseback riding! Dinner at our hotel's excellent restaurant.
Day 8:Alles. A day off of the bikes where we’ll take a 12.5km/8m walk along the breathtaking Cares Gorge through an area accessible only by foot. This is one of the most beautiful walks in Spain - literally carved out of the mountain wall, providing unbelievable vistas. A well-deserved dinner at our secluded hotel.
Day 9:Alles to Santillana del Mar (30km/19m). Today we’ll have a short ride along the Deva River to reach one of Spain’s most picturesque villages - Santillana del Mar. An unbelievably pretty town - the whole town has been declared a national monument! We stay in a wonderful old hotel in the centre of the village. Tonight we’ll enjoy a special farewell feast.
Day 10:Depart.
how this holiday makes a difference
Throughout our journey we stay at generally small, locally or nationally owned independent hotels - we never block book. Our itinerary takes us through small towns and villages, who owe their livelihoods to agriculture and quality tourism. In fact, the whole of the region’s economy depends largely on travel and tourism. Instead of running people through on a bus, we guide them by bike and thereby encourage local interaction and the purchase of handicrafts and produce, particularly the famous Cabrales Cheese!

The Picos region is one of outstanding natural beauty; low-impact travel practices such as ours promote and sustain efforts to keep the area clear of mass tourism in favour of more personal and in turn, lower impact hospitality infrastructure. We also only take small groups of around ten people - this minimizes our impact and maximizes our attention to each individual.

Another fact that cannot be overlooked is the simple enjoyment locals have in seeing the riders pass through town. When laying down the arrows, the “chalker” lets the locals know that the group will be passing through town in 30 minutes or so, and the older residents often line up on benches and cheer us as we pass.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
