highly commended
This tourism business was Highly Commended in our 2007 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards - the largest awards of their kind in the world, and organised by responsibletravel.com in association with The Times, World Travel Market and Geographical Magazine, of the Royal Geographical Society.

Since 2004, the Awards has recognised individuals, companies and organisations in travel making a big commitment to the culture and economies of local communities and helping to conserve biodiversity.

how this holiday makes a difference
Due to human encroachment, both the numbers of the giant pandas and their habitat have diminished significantly. They are now one of the most endangered animals in the world. By joining this tour you can assist the Wolong Panda Centre with their primary goal - to protect the Giant Panda and their habitat. This tour is one of a range of volunteer style tours that we offer. Others include community work, working with elephants or even cloud forest conservation. And it's not just the volunteer tours where we make a difference, but in our whole range of tours.

We employ both local and western tour leaders throughout the countries we tour in. All our guides are locally employed and we work with local agents and small family run hotels and businesses wherever we can. In each of our major destinations we have adopted at least one Responsible Travel Project to support.

In China not only are we assisting the Panda Centre but we also support the Kind Heart Schools Programme where funds are used to cover the educational costs for children who would otherwise not be able to afford to study.

We practice a responsible way of travelling and all our tour leaders will provide a briefing about this when you arrive on tour, covering topics such as littering, appropriate dress and behaviour, and information about any projects we are working on in the destination. We expect our travellers to respect these guidelines and join in with responsible attitude to travel.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've lead the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
