This cultural trip of Kenya's hidden treasures gets well off the usual tourist route. You will embark on guided walks to unique destinations, and absorb the cultures and ways of life of a number of local peoples, including a home stay with villagers from the Luo tribe.

  • day-by-day itinerary
    Day 1:Arrival. Arrive in Nairobi any time.
    Day 2:Lake Naivasha. Drive through the rich Kikuyu farmland to the edge of the Rift Valley. Arrive to camp on the shore of Lake Naivasha which has a large resident bird population including the ibis, lovebirds, fish eagle and hoopoe. (B)
    Day 3:Lake Naivasha Green Crater Lake walk. After breakfast, take a boat ride to the beginning of the walk. Arrive at the Green Crater Lake by mid-morning and begin a game walk.
    Day 4:Nakuru, Menegai Crater. Journey to Nakuru and explore the colourful town. In the early afternoon, drive to Menegai Crater to take in panoramic views of both Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria.
    Day 5:Nakuru National Park. Rise early to set off for the park. Continue on in search of black and white rhino, lion, buffalo, impala, thompson gazelle and warthog.
    Day 6:Bogoria/Baringo. Travel to Lake Baringo which is famous for abundant birdlife. Tour with a local guide, have a picnic lunch, then continue to Lake Baringo. (L)
    Day 7:Kakamega Rainforest. Drive west to Kakamega, a virgin tropical rainforest that is home to a huge variety of birds and monkeys. (B,L,D)
    Day 8:Kakamega Rainforest. Stretch your legs with a morning rainforest walk. The afternoon is free to take additional walks with local rangers and guides, or just relax at our campground. (B,L,D)
    Day 9:Kisumu. After a morning walk, pack up and drive to the third largest city in Kenya, Kisumu. This area is home to the second largest tribe in the country, the Luo. (B)
    Day 10:Homabay. Head deep into the more traditional side of Kenya. Visit the legendary Crying Stone then drive to the southern part of Lake Victoria and visit the picturesque village of Homabay. (B,L)
    Day 11:Magina Village. A chance to experience the ‘real life’ side of Africa. Feel free to wander amongst the villagers and try and strike up a conversation with the locals and enjoy their hospitality. (B,L,D)
    Day 12:Magina Village. Absorb the Luo tribe way of life, by mingling with the tribesmen and possibly hiring a ‘Boda Boda’ (rickshaw) to get around town the traditional way. (B,L,D)
    Day 13:Kericho. Pack up and head to Kisii, the land of great coffee and tea farming, then on to Kericho, the tea capital of western Kenya. (B)
    Day 14:Nairobi. After breakfast, proceed to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon. (B)
    Day 15:Nairobi. Depart Nairobi any time. (B)

    Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

    Accommodation: The majority of our hotels are small, locally owned and family operated establishments. This tour also includes seven nights of participation camping. No area of the world is more suitable for camping and being in touch with your environment than Africa. This tour also includes an opportunity for a homestay in Magina village. Our travellers will visit the local school, and have an opportunity to see how the Luo people live.

    Local guides and operators: By working with local guides and operators, we provide economic benefits directly to the local people and businesses. Our local guides are experts in flora, fauna, and history and culture, and provide our travellers with insight into local knowledge.

    Tour leaders: Our tour leaders receive special training in low-impact travel and regional conservation issues and projects. They are also provided with a Sustainable Travel Manual. Tour leaders are selected based on their knowledge of, and commitment to sustainable travel. All our tour leaders speak English and have first aid and CPR certification.
