the amazing things you'll be doing
This project, which featured in a Channel 4 series last autumn, helps to teach children in the small village of Niyakasiru in the peaceful southern region of Uganda, near the border with Tanzania.
Most of the children in Niyakasiru don’t go to school. They work in the fields because their parents can’t afford to pay the school fees. This project aims to give these children a proper education while providing a steady income for the village. You will be staying at the unique “Teach Inn Uganda” which was built to house volunteer teachers and to help fund future projects that will benefit the local community.
All the money raised by the hotel is ploughed back into projects that benefit the local community. At the moment they are building a much needed grain store. This is a really worthwhile project that will make a huge and lasting difference to the lives of people in this poor rural area. A complete Online TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course is included so that you can offer the children the quality of education they deserve.

volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you are looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world. Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference
|
The village school in Niyakasiru cannot afford to pay teachers good salaries and this means that recruiting and retaining staff is extremely difficult. Many of the permanent teachers at the school have to undertake a second job and this means that their hours at the school are sporadic and unpredictable. The school is extremely under-resourced and classes can have as many 60 students. This significantly lowers the standard of teaching and the students inevitably suffer from it.
This project will help to ensure that there is a constant flow of volunteers going to the school so that the children will receive the standard of education that they deserve. Not only will you be helping these children to develop skills that will allow them to build a brighter future, but you will also be helping to provide the local community with a steady income through your stay at the “Teach INN Uganda”. All money raised by the hotel will be ploughed straight back into local projects. By getting involved with Teach Inn Uganda, you know that your contributions will make a lasting impact on the community. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
