introduction to Bear tracking holiday in Slovakia

This trip offers a unique opportunity to track bears and other wildlife in their natural habitat, surrounded by the beauty of the High Tatra Mountains. You will explore areas that are otherwise closed to tourism, accompanied by the expert rangers who lead the High Tatras Bear Project. Between exhilarating walks in the mountains, you will have a chance to enjoy the charming architecture in this area and explore the old Polish city of Krakow.

A Hands On Adventure
Working with the expert guides and rangers who lead the High Tatras bear project, you will search not only for bears, but also wolves, wildcats and more, sleeping in remote mountain cottages, usually reserved only for park rangers. These cottages offer immediate access to prime wildlife areas. You will be fully integrated in this study, with access to all the latest data collected and you will also be able to track the movements of the study bears wearing GPS transmitters. Included in the price is a €180 contribution which goes directly to the bear conservation project.

Tatra Mountains of Slovakia and Poland
The Tatra Mountains stretch along the border between Poland and Slovakia and are one of Europe’s most diverse environments. The dramatic mountain landscapes still receive relatively few foreign visitors, yet they offer fantastic opportunities for walking. This itinerary includes access to the Bielskie Tatry (White Tatras), an area usually off-limits to the public and strictly controlled as a National Park.

Central European Adventure
Walk in the wild areas of central Europe and explore the natural attractions of the mountains, meadows, thermal pools and forests while joining the staff of the High Tatras Bear Project on exciting work to protect local bears. As well as exploring the landscape, you will have time to discover the beautiful medieval cities of Krakow and Spisska Sobota.

Biodiversity and conservation
The mountains have definitely benefitted from the lack of intensive tourism, and the conservation work that features in this trip is a key factor in helping to maintain the varied and successful populations of large mammals such as bears, wolves and chamois. The other flora and fauna is very diverse, making any visit here extremely interesting for anyone interested in natural history.

day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Depart London Fly to Krakow where you will meet your group leader at the airport and drive to Liptovsky Hradok (approx. 3.5 hours) where you will stay overnight in a beautifully renovated castle – a real treat!  Hotel (1 night)
Day 2-3: Western Tatras After breakfast, the Bear Watch Team will give a lecture about their work and an introduction to all aspects of the tour ahead.  The Adventure Company work with Bear Watch Tours to develop and expand a greater awareness of Slovakia’s magnificent wildlife especially its populations of bears and wolves.  Both these animals have traditionally been seen as a danger to the community and the most sought after target for sport hunting.  Our hope is that through a better understanding of the behaviour of these animals, they will be regarded as magnificent natural assets - something to be proud of and to protect.

Next, you head off into the Western Tatras Mountains, beyond the reach of other tourists, where you will go on your very first mountain trek in search of bears as well as red and roe deer!  Bears will be tracked in part using GPS.  Recent advances in animal collaring techniques have vastly improved data collection for all mammals, particularly those dwelling in forests and with larger ranges.  A new generation of GPS collars allows animals such as bears to be monitored on an hourly basis wherever it is they roam.  The information collected provides a far greater insight into the behaviour of bears giving an early warning system as they move towards areas of human population.  The new equipment needs far less manpower whilst providing much more information and of a higher quality.  As a result, a far greater proportion of research budgets can be used for education about bear behaviour.  In this way, many of the terrifying myths can be expelled and replaced by a desire to protect and promote Europe’s most awe-inspiring mammal.

Bear Watch Tours is working with the High Tatras National Park Authorities in a programme to collar four brown bears in the Western and Belianske Tatras and for the first time, take a comprehensive look at their lives.  The first bears were collared in and ever since research tours have run where every participant has a role to play in the programme and will have the opportunity to help in expanding our knowledge of bear behaviour.  Every tour will begin with an extensive briefing from the Bear Watch Team and each person will be encouraged to fully participate in monitoring bear movements and behaviour through, for example, print and dung analysis and measurement of tree scratchings.

The next day, you will have a full day to explore the remote mountain passes looking for wildlife, starting with a early morning walk/drive for 2-3 hours and covering 20km and followed by an afternoon walk/drive in an adjacent valley for 6-8 hours and covering 30km.  You will stay overnight at a simple but wonderfully remote mountain ranger’s hut.  Although it is very basic with no electricity or indoor toilets, it is a truly unique experience and honour to be allowed to stay in an authentic ranger’s cottage and you will have prime wildlife viewing right on your doorstop.  Every effort is made to try and make you as comfortable as possible with shower tents being erected for the possibility of a quick wash and a chef is provided to cook for you in the mountain hut.  Basic rangers hut – Multi-share (1 night) BD/BLD NB: Groups of up to 7 passengers will follow this itinerary.  However, larger groups will split into two groups on day two.  One group will start the bear study in the Western Tatras and the other will start in the Belianske Tatras.  Both groups will reconvene in Spisska Sobota on day 4, before splitting once more to walk their second area on days 5 and 6.  All will come together again on day 7.
Day 4: Spisska Sobota Today you will have a short rest from wildlife watching.  After another early morning bear walk, you transfer to Spisska Sobota (approx. 45 mins) where you have the afternoon free for various optional activities.  There is the opportunity to visit the beautiful old spis towns of the region including the capital of them all, Levoca and admire the beautiful square at Spisska Sobota.  There will also be the opportunity to take a panoramic helicopter flight over the Tatras Mountains and the areas in which you have been searching for the bears.  Alternatively, you could choose to simply relax in the hot springs at Aqua city.  Pension (1 night) B
Day 5-6: Belianske Tatras This morning, you visit the Bear research office to look at all the latest data that has been collected.  After lunch, you will drive 50km to Jovorina (approx 1 hr) where you will walk in the Belianske Tatras in search of bears (4 hours/8km).  The following day will be a long walking day of 10 hours, covering approx. 15km.  The first night will be spent in a ranger’s hut whereas the second night will be in a mountain cottage, which is still multi-share with improved facilities including electricity, showers and indoor toilets.  Basic rangers hut – multi-share (1 night), Basic mountain cottage – multi-share (1 night), BD/BLD
Day 7: Krakow Drive to Zdiar (approx 6 hours/12 km) with breakfast en route.  After lunch, you gather to discuss the findings from the week and future plans for the project.  The extensive data collected through the GPS collars will provide the Bear Watch team with a much deeper knowledge of critical habitats used by the bears and their fundamental needs.  They will also attain a much more accurate delineation of bear corridors and crucial drinking and feeding locations.  Every year there are problem bears in the Tatras region and occasionally animals have to be shot.  A long term goal of Bear Watch Tours is to set up a large sanctuary to prevent this from happening in the future.  It will become a centre of bear research, youth education programmes and a wonderful means by which to see these animals acting as naturally as is possible in a micro-natural environment. Afterwards, you return to Krakow (approx 2.5 hours/100km) with free time to explore this historic city.  Hotel (1 night) B
Day 8: Fly to London After breakfast, you transfer to Krakow airport (approx 30 mins) for your flight back to London via Prague.  B

how this holiday makes a difference
Environment
This is a truly unique adventure holiday, where time is spent in an untouched wilderness, far from the usual tourist tracks, in a region only accessible to tourists travelling as part of Bear Watch Slovakia. Our in country agents are the only operators to have permission to take traveller into this area of the High Tatras Mountains, tracking and studying the bears of this isolated region. The work being done is vital to understanding the movements and behaviour of one of Europe’s most awe-inspiring mammals. Protecting this environment, educating the local community and understanding bear behaviour and numbers is the primary focus of this trip.

As well as financial support, €180 per passenger is contributed to the project and is included in the trip price, this itinerary offers valuable human resources to the bear tracking project. Travellers will spend a majority of the trip in the company of the experienced Bear Watch team; tracking the animals and monitoring their behaviour through (for example) print and dung analysis and measurement of tree scratchings. The project also aims to attain a much more accurate understanding of bear corridors and learn crucial patterns regarding drinking and feeding locations. The aim is gathering enough information on the animals to educate the people of the region who traditionally see them either as a dangerous threat or use them as targets for sport hunting. Through better understanding the behaviour of these animals, hopefully they will become regarded as magnificent natural assets.

We know a 3 day visit won’t always make a lasting impact to a project, but we hope your time at the here will demonstrate how little things can make a big difference, and leave you feeling that you have made a small (but valuable) contribution back to the area through which you’ve travelled.

Global warming is a real issue and travel is an inescapable contributor. We have teamed up with the Tourism Industry Carbon Offset Service to give you the opportunity to offset the carbon emissions from your flight. You’ll be asked upon booking if you want to donate to the solar stove and poverty reduction project we are supporting in South Africa – £4 for this trip. As a company we offset the carbon emissions from all staff travel and office energy use in full. Clients who travel with us will also automatically receive a copy of our Responsible Travel leaflet. This contains details and advice on how you can make a positive difference when you travel.

Community
We work in partnership with the following charities. SOS Children is the world’s largest orphan and abandoned children charity, helping some of the world’s most vulnerable children. We also support Friends of Conservation – an international charity committed to working with local people to develop a balance between their needs and the wildlife with which they share the natural habitat and ecosystems. Other charities that we work closely with include the Born Free Foundation, an animal welfare charity working to prevent animal suffering in captivity and to protect them in the wild, the Galapagos Conservation Trust - a UK charity that raises funds and awareness for the conservation of the Galapagos Islands, and The Travel Foundation, a UK charity that has been established to promote responsible travel practises throughout the whole of the travel industry.

We’ve highlighted a few of the ways we offer support to various charitable initiatives, both financially and otherwise, and now you can too. We have a Foundation, which we administer with contributions from you and us. A voluntary donation of £1 per person will be taken when booking a holiday which will be put to good use on one of our carefully selected projects. If you don’t want to make the donation, just tell us when you book. To encourage you to do this and to put our money where our mouth is, we’ll match every single £1 donated and we’ll give this to Just a Drop. This is a global charity founded by members of the international travel industry, aiming to provide clean water and sanitation where it is most badly needed. In the developing world it costs just £1 to supply water to a child for nearly 10 years, so for every single person who travels with us we’ll give Just a Drop £1.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
