introduction to Photography holiday in Patagonia

Torres del Paine National Park is a paradise for photographers and nature lovers: the fauna, flora and landscapes are unique. The trip is limited to 8 people and open to anyone who has a passion for photography. It is designed to allow everyone quality time at some fabulous locations, with accommodation, food and logistics all taken care of. Our photographic safari takes in some of the highlights of Paine including the Grey glacier, the vivid blue and green Lago Pehoe, and the superb views over the Towers and Horns, central to the massif.

Days spent in the park will be filled with breathtaking views of rock spires, snow covered peaks, shimmering glaciers, jewel coloured lakes and sun scorched grasslands dotted with wildflowers. Wildlife abounds here and you share the trail with guanacos, Darwin’s rhea, condors, Chilean flamingos, fox, buff-necked ibis, swans, geese, woodpeckers and even once in a while the elusive South American puma.

The photography sessions will be led by Bruce Percy. Bruce is an internationally-travelled and published photographer who also contributes articles to the Outdoor Photography magazine. He has visited and phorogrpahed Patagonia many times and has the knowledge to help you make the most of this photographic safari.

day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Punta Arenas. You need to arrive in Punta Arenas today. Hotel included.
Day 2:Punta Arenas - Paine. We head off from our hotel after breakfast and travel by mini bus to Torres del Paine national park. This is pretty much a full day journey, but we will stop for lunch in Puerto Natales (3 hour drive) before continuing to Torres del Paine (2 hour drive). Our first nights stay will be at a working farm, situated on the shores of Laguna Verde, with lovely views towards the Cuernos (Horns of Paine). (B,L,D)
Day 3:Working farm and Lago Sarmiento. In the morning, we spend time photographing the farm and Gauchos who work here. Breakfast and lunch are taken here before we move on in the afternoon towards the shores of Lago Sarmiento to photograph. We arrive in the evening at our hotel, situated on an island in Lago Pehoe, with commanding views over the Cuernos. This provides easy access for morning shots of the mountain range. (B,L,D)
Day 4:Lago Pehoe. Early morning start with a one hour hike to the top of Mirador Pehoe for one of the best photographic views of the Cuernos range with Lago Pehoe below. Return to the hotel for breakfast before heading back out into the surrounding region for more photography. Lunch is a picnic wherever we are situated in the park. Afternoon spent in the surrounding area before we drive onwards to our next night's stay. After dinner, it will be possible for participants to shoot the icebergs in Lago Grey. (B,L,D)
Day 5:Lago Grey. At the end of winter, Lago Grey is filled with bergs that have calved from Glacier Grey. We spend the morning photographing the bergs in Lago Grey. In the afternoon we take the boat trip up Lago Grey to the face of the glacier. This should provide plenty of opportunities to photograph the ice from up close as well as shoot the bergs in the lake. Transfer to the other edge of the park for our night's stay and dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 6:Laguna Azul. Early morning start, heading out to Laguna Azul in order to photograph from this excellent location views of the Torres. We spend some further time in this region of the park photographing the wildlife such as Guanacos in the afternoon. (B,L,D)
Day 7:Los Cuernos, return to Punta Arenas. Early morning start. We hope to obtain sunrise shots of the Cuernos from the eastern side of the park, before setting off for Punta Arenas, arriving in the afternoon. Tonight we have dinner together and stay at the hotel before saying farewell. (B,L,D)
Day 8:Departure. Tour ends after breakfast this morning. Let us know if you would like to arrange any extensions. (B)
how this holiday makes a difference
We are committed to working in conjunction with local communities in all the countries in which we operate. We use locally owned services such as hotels and restaurants, paying a fair price for those services. We buy fresh local produce for all of our treks from markets and small shops in each departure town. In preference we choose local over imported goods and use public transport whenever possible and feasible.

Sunlight captured on Chile photo tourOn all our tours we aim to minimize waste by using products with minimum packaging, leaving no litter and keeping all water sources clean. In the UK office we use recyclable and recycled materials when possible. We recycle what we can and attempt to keep waste to an absolute minimum. We promote paper saving by using email as much as possible and by keeping unwanted mail to a minimum. We use low-energy light bulbs, fair-trade and biodegradable products where possible. We are involved in on-going training of the staff we work with in the UK and in the Andes to ensure as high as possible standards of environmental care and responsible behaviour.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
