introduction to El Salvador holidays
The smallest and most densely populated country in Central America, El Salvador is re-awakening to its full potential after the brutal civil conflict of the 1980’s. Fifteen years after the signing of the peace accords El Salvador is re-discovering its cultural identity, archaeological treasures, contemporary artistic expression and culinary traditions.
Signature Experiences
Wine and Cheese with the Director. Join the director of the David J. Guzman Museum of Anthropology (MUNA) for a private tour and informal chat. Reflections on War & Peace. Meet survivors of the violent civil conflict that tore the country apart in the 1980’s. Hear about their hopes and challenges, 15 years after the signing of the peace accords.
Artist Studio Visits. Enter the homes of El Salvador’s contemporary artists. Share their art and an intimate lunch with sweeping views of Lake Ilopango. Fallen Angels. Meet a Reuters’ photo-journalist who covered the war and its aftermath in El Salvador. Luis’ current multi-year project is a hauntingly beautiful testament shaped deeply by his own experience. Living Archaeology. Visit El Salvador’s most important ancient sites and current excavations with the country’s Head of Archaeology. Market to Table. Go inside, from the local market to the kitchen, for a flavorful class on El Salvadoran cuisine led by a celebrated local chef. Savor the results at a private dinner on the terrace of a friend’s home.

small group cultural tours
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends it's good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as experiencing new cultures.how this holiday makes a difference
One of our three founding principles is making a positive Impact through our travels. In El Salvador, a country torn apart by violent civil conflict, we support the efforts of the town of Aguacayo to re-build their community which was completely destroyed in the late 1980's. Formerly well known throughout the country for their typical candy (dulces de Aguacayo) We are working with community leaders to purchase the equipment needed to produce these candies once again. This will create self sustainable economic opportunity for the community and help revive a beloved tradition. We aim to travel responsibly in other ways as well, working only with local, bi-lingual trip leaders as well as specialist guides and day leaders. Not only is this sustainable economic policy, it is by far the best way to learn about the local people and culture. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
