the amazing things you'll be doing
Ukraine is the largest country in Europe, but one of the least visited, rewarding visitors with friendly people, magnificent architecture and miles of gently rolling steppes.

Our itinerary starts in the beautiful city of Lviv, said to be the new Prague (without the masses of tourists). From Lviv we will make a side trip to the little visited Carpathian National Nature Park, which is Ukraine's largest such park and home to the Hutsuls people, descendents of a nomadic horde.

We then head for the capital by train, using the Grand Tour vintage sleeping car attached to the overnight express bound for Kiev. We will have time to explore the capital and recommend you include the optional ecotour to the site of the world’s worst environmental disaster in history, Chernobyl.

Facilities onboard include a good restaurant, music saloon, 4 bars, night club, and cinema. You can look forward to a warm and friendly welcome from both the professional crew and your fellow passengers. A relaxing journey to reflect on your travels and an opportunity to mix with the friendly Ukrainian people, perhaps even sharing the odd vodka or two as the vessel steams towards Istanbul. Your package will include the return flight from Istanbul back to the UK, together with your choice of accommodation in Istanbul.
how this holiday makes a difference
We are one of the few operators to offer you the chance to visit the Carpathian National Park, home to the Hutsuls people. Introducing tourism to such a remote, little visited corner of Europe, is done in a way which respects and helps preserve the Hutsuls’ traditions. We know that the Hutsuls everyday clothes are better suited for life and conditions in the mountains than western clothes. Also, Hutsuls’ horses are a much more reliable means of transport in the forests, as with no roads it is very difficult for cars. Our visit brings vital economic and moral support for this community to continue with its traditional way of life.

Ukraine was the sight of the world’s worst environmental disaster – Chernobyl. Chernobyl still contains some of the most contaminated land in the world, yet it has become a haven for wildlife - a nature reserve in all but name. The exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear power station is teeming with life. As humans were evacuated, animals moved in. Existing populations multiplied and species not seen for decades, such as the lynx and eagle owl, began to return. Przewalski's horses are breeding in the zone. There are even bears, an animal that has not trodden this part of Ukraine for centuries. Working with our local partner, a contribution from every tour goes towards helping those people directly affected by the disaster.

At the end of the journey travellers may donate any unwanted clothing, medicine and books, which are distributed to appropriate local charities.

We only employ local staff and unlike many operators we believe that to send a foreign Tour Leader along to accompany your trip is an unnecessary burden on your wallet and our carbon footprint. We believe that locals know best. Our local operators only use locally owned accommodation. This means your money stays in the area to benefit the local community. When possible we use local transport, (i.e. rail or bus) and we always use local restaurants, markets and shops. In doing this your travels are supporting and encouraging the development of local services.

We only work with operators who are as committed as we are to putting something back into the communities we visit. This may include giving a percentage of the profits from each tour to a foundation to help street children or local conservation projects. Furthermore, in order to allow our clients to make an informed decision on where a greater proportion of their money should be spent, we avoid including pre-paid full board meals where possible. Local restaurants and cafes then benefit.

Our groups average only six clients, and many tours operate on a private basis with just two travellers. This has much less impact when travelling through rural areas, reducing our environmental and social affects.

Finally to emphasis our commitment to Responsible Tourism all clients will receive a copy of our Travellers Code of Conduct with their travel documents.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
