the amazing things you'll be doing
See Aboriginal art and unique wildlife in one of the most remote wilderness retreats in the world.
Getting there is part of the adventure, with access strictly limited to air. You’ll fly by light aircraft from Kununurra, over some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth, to our private airstrip. Then, ride by 4WD vehicle for the final few kilometers to the bush camp. Spectacularly isolated, all eight secluded bush-style cabins enjoy 180 degree views of the ocean, combining a true remote area experience with safety, comfort and style.
With a maximum of just twelve guests at any time, your privacy is ensured. Although simple, we provide unrivalled luxury for a bush camp, including a refreshing spring fed plunge pool and gourmet and camp oven meals showcasing freshly caught seafood and a selection of fine Australian wines and beers. With one staff member to every two guests, service is also unparalleled so you get to do what you want when you want.
Accompanied by our experienced and passionate Kimberley bush guides, guests have the unlimited opportunity to discover this relatively unexplored landscape; marvel at highly significant archaeological sites and ancient rock art including the mysterious ‘Bradshaws’; thrill at the challenge of abundant salt water fishing, test your skills against the elusive Barramundi; delight in simpler pleasures and treasures of this rugged and spectacular wilderness and marvel at the plethora of unique wildlife, from crocodiles, sea turtles and sea eagles to euros and dingoes; many of which can be spotted swinging from your hammock at the Lodge.
Activities depend on the tides, sunsets and what you want to do. For this reason we cannot say exactly what time or which day we do things but here is an idea of some activities you can incorporate into your stay. Each of the below can be done as either a half or whole day trip.

how this holiday makes a difference

Hidden amongst ancient ranges overlooking a spectacular bay, The Bush Camp is a benchmark property in the Kimberley region and has led the way in nature-based low impact tourism. Stringent regulations designed to maintain the integrity of the wilderness environment applied during the development phase and sound environmental management practices continue to direct the day-to-day operations.
The Bush Camp is located on high conservation value land that has been recommended for future inclusion into the Western Australian conservation estate. To achieve and to monitor environmental sustainability, to help preserve ancient rock art and to investigate flora & fauna, a range of experts are consulted on a regular basis, resulting in a comprehensive ongoing research program including archaeological, cultural, ethno-botanical and habitat research. Your stay will help sponsor these ongoing scientific research programs as well as natural and cultural resource management programs. The Bush Camp’s entire tourism initiative is based on environmental protective principles, with the aim to provide a true wilderness experience. We are living in an ancient environment, rich in flora and fauna, archaeological and ancient rock art sites and modern history- we continually and responsibly educate guests through our guided tours and activities. Our guides are required to have substantial experience of the Kimberley environment. This together with their detailed knowledge of flora, fauna, rock art and bush skills, provides guests with comprehensive and accurate information on the area. This enhances guest’s experiences and ensures they leave with a greater appreciation of the region and its rich natural, cultural and historical significance. Water is gravity fed from a natural fresh spring and limited numbers of guests protects overuse of this resource. All landscaping is natural with no use of irrigation. Water is solar heated for guest showers and solar lights illuminate the pathways. The office is mainly electronic and paperless and any paper used on the camp is recycled. All firewood is still derived from the airstrip clearing and from trees blown over by the cyclone. The soaps and shampoo supplied to guests and washing powder are all bio-degradable. Biodegradable products are disposed of in a trench and regularly covered with soil. Tins are crushed and stockpiled with other non combustible rubbish for return to Wyndham. Wildlife is observed from a distance and not followed or approached. We keep the number of guests low and restricted access and use of guides minimises impact on habitat. Introduced plant species are not planted and removed if found. We encourage the Aboriginal descendants of the area to be an integral part of the Bush Camp. Aboriginal people have been invited to take part in and contribute to research in the area. Mirriuwong Elder and Aboriginal spokesperson at The Bush Camp, Ju Ju Wilson, has significantly contributed to the bush tucker species list for the camp and conducts Bush Tucker and Rock Art tours. The Camp has also employed many aboriginal staff members over the years. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
