introduction to Marine conservation in Belize

If you care about the environment, we need your help.

We offer diving and marine conservation trips to Belize with a difference. The trips are focused on the environment and also on the people that go on them. We accept small groups only and a variety of ages. 1 week to 3 month trips available.

Non intensive, fun, all inclusive marine conservation trips to Belize in the Caribbean. This is a diving and snorkeling paradise. Spend your time on a remote island in the Caribbean, no other dive boats, choose where you want to go, discover new sites, dive when you want to and one of the best places in the world to dive.

Our trips are not just for scientists or gap year students, anyone could get involved….and….not have to spend 5-10 weeks on any given project. You can come for 1 week or 3 months, you choose.

Our conservation projects include monitoring spawning patterns of fish, commercial fish species such as lobsters and conch, social-economic impact on the reef, and turtle monitoring. We are affiliated to a long term scientific global monitoring organisation called Reef Check and we work with The Department of Fisheries and NGO's in Belize. The current primary objective is for the Belizean Government to enforce preservation zones in the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Park (SCMR).

All inclusive trips include:
  • All diving, accommodation, meals on the island and diving equipment
  • Weekly trips to Hunting Caye island, an, exclusive ‘castaway' island
  • Training for survey methodologies
  • Fantastic diving on the 2nd biggest barrier reef in the world
  • No experience necessary
  • Swim with whale sharks and dolphins
  • Year round tropical temperatures
  • Pre-breakfast and night dives
  • PADI Diving tuition available (PADI Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue, Dive Master)

This is a diving and snorkeling paradise, amazing diving, a beautiful Caribbean island with stunning white sandy palm fringed beaches. People can dive, snorkel or learn to dive in one of the most beautiful places in the world and no other dive boats. As opposed to 'diver soup' from a big dive boat or liveaboard where everyone is rushing to get into the water at a designated site, you choose where and how we dive.

Learn to dive in a relaxed manner where you can take your time, the water is clear and calm and you get either 1 on 1 training or very small groups of no more than 3 people.
  • traveller reviews for Marine conservation in Belize

A five star diving holiday so out of the way that it hasn’t been destroyed by millions of visitors. A real "lost corner of the world", I can't wait to get back. (more)
volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.

how this holiday makes a difference
We are a not for profit marine conservation company that focus on conserving the environment by using recreational divers to sustain the organisation. The vision is to help conserve the environment whilst offering the ‘holiday diver’ a chance to put something back into the environment and at the same time obtaining a well earned break.

We working alongside the Belizean Department of Fisheries and local NGO’s to monitor and maintain the marine environment of the Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve, Southern Belize. Work includes the surveying and monitoring of commercial species such as lobster and conch, surveying and helping to protect the spawning fish aggregations, water quality testing, turtle conservation, MBRS surveys and Reef Check surveys for long term global studies and analysis.

We are located in a non touristy basic town in Belize where there is 75% poverty. We bring tourists to the area who spend money in restaurants, local stores and with tour guides. All of our supplies are bought locally from the market and general stores.

Beach, Marine conservation In BelizeWe also spend money with local businesses such as the mechanic who maintains our boat. It is important to us our guests integrate into the local community. We employ Belizean people and we run a training program for the youths of Toledo where we give young people the chance to become Dive Masters and thus obtain well paid jobs in the touristy resorts such as San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
