the amazing things you'll be doing
Teach children in Ghana.
Join this programme as a volunteer for the chance to live and work in a coastal community in the Central region of Ghana in West Africa. We have teamed up with the Sabre Charitable Trust to offer much needed support to some of Ghana's rural communities.
During this placement you will be living in a small community run guesthouse or a small apartment, just a few minutes walk from the school while teaching the local school children.
All your food and accommodation is included in the fee, as well as your transfer to the project site and your project induction. During your time in Ghana you will have a chance to explore perhaps a guided tour of Elmina Castle, a visit to Elmina town or a visit to Kakum National Park where you can take a journey through the rainforest on a canopy walkway.
Ghana's coastline is dotted with the remnants of over 15 slave trading castles, from where many thousands of Ghanaians were shipped to slavery in North America. Both Elmina and Cape Coast Castles, just a short journey from Brenu Beach, have been restored to their original state and are well worth a visit.
The afternoons will be spent on extra curricular activities with a group/class of children from the primary or secondary school. Your work will differ each day and will range from simply playing with the kids, to teaching reading and writing, to coordinating a school trip.
You will also be expected to plan your afternoon lessons each day, you may be able to prepare for this before you go by speaking to local primary or secondary school teachers once you have received your teacher’s brief that will outline the school’s needs. Be prepared for anything!

a day in the life of a volunteer
You will work in one of the schools from Monday to Friday. Days start with an early breakfast before getting to the school at about 8am. All volunteers will assist in the kindergarten school for morning lessons that start at around 8:30am. The afternoons will be spent on extra curricular activities with a group/class of children from the primary or secondary school. Your work will differ each day and will range from simply playing with the kids, to teaching reading and writing, to coordinating a school trip.

volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world. Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference
|
Like many rural schools in Ghana the schools where you will work are extremely under-resourced. Many of the existing classrooms do not have any window panes or shutters, they are separated from each other by thin walls that do not reach up to the roof which often leaks during the rainy season causing classes to be suspended. It is not just the state of the school buildings that makes learning difficult for the children. The schools lack even the most basic learning materials and teaching aids – the government is meant to supply text books, but there are never enough to go round, and it is not uncommon to see five or six children trying to read from the same book.
For an average duration on this project (8 weeks), 70% of your payment goes out to the project, to cover all of your costs, as well as making a direct donation to the project itself. With money raised through volunteers, our partners have already provided some teaching and learning materials for the school, but there is a great deal more which can be done. Our partners have calculated that to feed, clothe and educate one child for a year would cost £23 - there are currently many children registered with the school that cannot pay their fees. The school facilities are so basic that it does not have any running water, electricity or a telephone line. The lack of water and sanitation facilities has major implications for the health of the pupils and staff. In August 2004 volunteers built and paid for a water storage tank for the Kindergarten school for the purpose of providing clean drinking and washing water. Our partners are currently funding the building of a three classroom Junior School on the new site and they have already refurbished the Kindergarten school. All work is funded by money raised through volunteers. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
