Alila resorts in Bali are on its last lap of being certified, having already achieved the prestigious Green Globe Benchmarked Certificate under the Green Globe sustainability reports, the international certification programme recognised for sustainable travel and tourism. Their environmental assessments ensure responsible behaviour across economic, social and environmental management and ensure continuous refinement of their "modus operandi" so that properties can ultimately develop and operate in a sustainable manner. Also, in November 2006, Alila Manggis and Alila Ubud achieved further green awards. Both resorts scored second best at 85% in their commitment to 40 best practices identified. Excerpts from News Straits times, Malaysia, 19 November 2006: Where other resorts worry about the thread count of their bed linen, this resort has focused on ensuring no wastewater is discharged from its properties. It makes third party suppliers aware of its policy on reducing packaging and isn’t afraid to change suppliers that do not meet its needs. Its switch to locally produced organic soap and toiletries helps support 100 local families that produce the items. Each guest gets a free, locally made beach bag and freshly ironed laundry sits in a reusable rattan basket in the room. The group’s policies are based on the Balinese Tri Hita Karana philosophy or the three causes of happiness. It is about achieving harmony and balance in people’s relationship with god, with each other and the environment. (The Tri Hita Karana Tourism Awards were created in Bali in recognition of their own tourism industry goals, now internationally recognised by the WTO as a leader in environmentally friendly tourism standards. Alila Ubud proudly won the Gold award in 2004 for their unending respect and admiration of Ubud’s artistic culture in the locale region of the Ayung river. Alila Manggis also won a Bronze award for their efforts in promoting East Bali as a new eco-friendly destination, with the implementation of environmental water treatment systems, plastic recycling projects, support of the East Bali Poverty Project and their commitment to the conservative traditions). |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
