the amazing things you'll be doing

The house offers the best of all worlds. Just sit and admire the view with a glass of wine in hand, or head south to get to know the French and Italian Riviera. The energetic can don their boots and enjoy walking on miles of trails around the house, or jump in the car for an hour and explore the Alpine terrain to the North. The house sleeps up to 10 people and is just 30 minutes from Nice and 15 minutes from the sea and Italy, making it ideal for a holiday break for a group of family and friends.

This gite is the winter base of Denis Longfellow and his troupe of horses. This year visitors have the ideal opportunity to enjoy the house in the summer months when Denis is up in the Mercantour National Park. See the Mercantour section in France for other great breaks in the South of France, including the possibility to take part in the bi-annual horse transhumance.

how this holiday makes a difference
American born Denis Longfellow has been integrated into French rural life over the past 30 years. He worked as a shepherd for many years and now divides his time between Sainte-Agnès and Le Boréon in the Mercantour, moving his beloved troupe of horses between the two sites. He spends the winter months on the coast, offering riding for adults and children alike. Lucky guests have the chance to stay here when he moves north.

Sea view from Provence self catering gite in France He is keen to offer the possibility to share nature and the companionship of animals to all and keeps his prices down for riding to allow people with limited funds to ride. He is a horse whisperer and a follower of Y Ching philosophy.

He grazes his horses in a variety of different people’s fields around the village of Sainte-Agnes (the horses can often be found wandering about) and is a local legend – bringing revenue into the village - which although quite divine is completely unspoilt.

The house is gradually being renovated, not into a luxurious summer palace but a place of calm and retreat for visitors. Guests are able to re-cycle and purchase organic vegetables in the village, or there’s the possibility of picking your own veg from the garden.

Denis is in the process of establishing an educational centre on the outskirts of the Mercantour National Park. The site will be as ecological as possible and will include geothermal heating and solar panels to minimise the impact of its presence. He gathers together local restaurateurs to encourage networking.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
