    day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Arrive around 3.30pm. Free afternoon. We suggest a leisurely stroll to the creperie at St Justin where you can enjoy a traditional French snack in the sunshine. The restaurant is on an isolated promontory looking out onto the lovely Bastan valley, the village of Barèges and the towering mountains on every side - it can only be accessed on foot.
Day 2:Peak ascent. We climb from our village to the spectacular Pene det Pourri summit (2587m). This is a challenging ascent, but well-rewarded by amazing views in every direction - look North beyond Lac Bleu, the deepest natural lake in the Pyrenees, to the plains, East to the observatory and the Pic du Midi, West across the Atlantic Pyrenees and South to the Spanish frontier and the Brèche de Roland. A stunning introduction to the Pyrenees!
Day 3:Canyoning and via ferrata. Start the day with an adventurous descent of a mountain torrent, with swimming, jumping and abseiling, depending on your choice of trip. In the afternoon we scale the cliffs below the spectacular Pont Napoleon bridge. Suspended high above the Gave de Pau river, we cling to the canyon walls on a via ferrata course of fixed ropes, pins and ladders. .
Day 4:Mountain biking. We hire bikes locally, and explore the ancient mountain paths and villages of our area. Routes can be varied depending on your ability, and are mainly downhill (with uphill minibus transfers).
Day 5:Day off. Free day to discover the local attractions at your leisure. Unwind in the thermal spa, visit the Pic du Midi observatory and stock up on mountain cheeses, sausages and the wines of the south west at the Bareges market. Your choice!
Day 6:Caving. An adrenalin-packed introduction to caving. We begin the trip with a 20m abseil into a deep cavern, followed by a full day of scrambling, sliding, climbing and crawling through an underground labyrinth. We even have lunch 100m below the surface - the strangest picnic spot you'll ever experience. Exciting, unpredictable ... don't worry - our guides know exactly where they're going!
Day 7:Whitewater rafting & paragliding. An exhilarating morning descending the rapids of the 'Gave de Pau' river, followed by lunch in the historic spa town of Argeles-Gazost (excellent icecreams!). In the afternoon, we return to our valley to meet the paragliding school and experience a bird's eye view of the mountains, with a tandem jump from the Col du Tourmalet.
Day 8:Packing! We depart for the airport around 10am.

    2009 set departure information:

traveller reviews for Pyrenees family activity holiday

I particularly loved our mountain walk, with spectacular views and carpets of Pyrenean irises, and I think one of the highlights for all of us was swimming in a beautiful mountain lake. (more)
    family activity centre holiday
For many families, flexibility is the key on a holiday and we have used our operational experience to offer just that. Activity centres have one base from which we offer a range of exciting, fun and educational activities that may appeal to all the family or just some. You can choose how many you do and who in the family does them. You will not be forced into a group (although there are normally other families around) and if you want free time to explore as a family our staff are there to advise what there is to see. Each activity has a stated minimum age and children must be accompanied by at least 1 parent while undertaking an activity.
how this holiday makes a difference
We are a small business based in the high mountain village of Bareges in the Haute Pyrenees. Bareges is a traditional thermal spa village, nestling just on the edge of the Neouvielle Nature Reserve and the Pyrenees National Park. The Pyrenees are a great place for a family holiday with a difference – experience all the thrills and spills of white water rafting, canyoning, climbing, pony-trekking, caving, mountain biking, hiking and more… whilst also discovering the secrets of the mountains. Our aim is to provide active holidays and promote awareness of the mountain environment (geology and geography, flora and fauna), to support the local people and community (history, culture, language and traditional way of life) and allow you to discover the beauty of the Pyrenees without upsetting their delicate natural balance.

We practice a “tread lightly” policy in the mountains. Our activities rely on natural energy sources - leg-power for cycling, hiking, caving and climbing; the rushing energy of an upland river for canyoning and rafting; or the soaring thermals rising up the mountainside for paragliding. We visit some wild and beautiful places, but try to leave no trace of our passing. Group sizes are small – between two and eight people – to minimise our impact on the fragile mountain environment, and maximise the enjoyment for our clients.

Although most of our day trips require a short journey by road, we have a single company minibus and offer transfers to reduce the need for guests to hire multiple vehicles at the airport. We promote travel to the Pyrenees by public transport (Eurostar to Paris, TGV train to Lourdes, local bus service to Bareges). Alternatively, families can bring their own car on the ferry to Spain, thus avoiding short haul flights. Virtually all of our business is conducted over the internet, and we cut down on paper-consumption and airmail miles by posting all of our information on our website and communicating with our customers by email.

Our activity holidays are based from a traditional house in a high mountain village. We spent two years restoring the house to its former glory, maintaining the original features and using local craftsmen whilst taking steps to improve the energy-efficiency of the house. Our work has encouraged a general "facelift" of the village. The house is now gas centrally-heated, by a very efficient, modern, on-demand boiler. Heating is supplemented with a wood-stove burning wood from managed, sustainable forest (with zero carbon debt). We encourage our guests to close their shutters at night to conserve heating energy. The roof and all exterior walls are fully-insulated. Washrooms are fitted with showers rather than baths, and the toilets have an eco-flush option to reduce water consumption. We use eco-friendly A-rated appliances, wash our own bedding and line-dry our linen outside in the mountain air whenever possible. Around half of our household waste is recycled, including glass bottles, tins and cans, paper/cardboard and plastic bottles.

We live and work in the Pyrenees year round and operate as a French company, paying local taxes and using local activity guides, instructors, craftsmen and tradesmen. In opening up the British market, and promoting this beautiful area through the internet, we hope to bring much-needed custom to the people of the valley and to strengthen the village community. The foreign market is becoming increasingly important now, as the number of French tourists travelling within their own country is generally on the decline.

We encourage our guests to shop in the village and support the small traders. All of our food is home-cooked with a French theme, and includes seasonal vegetables and locally-produced meats purchased from the village butcher – Monsieur Sabathie. Specialities include the Bareges-Gavarnie AOC lamb which never leaves our valley, delicious dry-cured mountain sausages, hams and pates. We introduce our guests to local honey, mountain sheep’s' cheeses, confit duck and Tarbais beans produced in the SW of France. Locally-produced goods can be purchased at the village market on Wednesdays, or direct from the producers on open farm visits. The house bar is stocked with local wines and spirits, and guests are encouraged to try local dishes at a mountain restaurant on our night off.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
