the amazing things you'll be doing
The Pyrenees are a brilliant place to discover the challenging sport of canyoning. Canyoning is generally only available in the mountains, where steep valleys and rushing mountain streams lead to the formation of canyons. The idea of canyoning is to follow the river downstream in any way possible - sliding, swimming, jumping, climbing and abseiling. You can try canyoning as a long-weekend's introduction to canyoning or as a full week of canyoning working up towards the descent of technically challenging, vertical canyons at the end of the week.

The most exciting time of year for canyoning is in late Spring/early Summer, when the snow melt from the high mountains makes the rivers roar. This does mean that the water is cold though, so Autumn is probably the best time of year, when the mountain streams are at their warmest. The rushing waters and lush vegetation of the French side of the border give our local canyons a humid, "rainforest" atmosphere. There are water chutes and pools to jump in, and you will get very wet abseiling down waterfalls! The sunny canyons of the Spanish Pyrenees are often drier and scattered with warm blue pools. There is less water but the abseils are generally longer and more challenging. The rock formations are rounded and smooth - almost like caving above ground. We like to mix the different characters of the canyons of France and Spain with a two-centre break during a full week of canyoning. We use fully qualified local instructors for our canyoning, who will tailor their instruction and itinerary to the particular skills and requirements of your group. On the week-long itinerary, you will also be accompanied by ourselves as English speakers.

Canyoning holiday accommodation
The first three nights' accommodation are based in the village of Bareges. Our house is situated just off the main street, close to all the local shops, bakery, bars and restaurants and the thermal baths. We have five en-suite bedrooms, a heated equipment room, sauna, dining room and spacious lounge with a wood-burning stove, bar, library, reading/games corner, music centre and computer with internet access. For the second half of the week we transfer to Spain and the legendary canyoning area of the "Sierra de Guara". Just over the French border, and around the base of the spectacular Mont Perdu (the second highest peak in the Pyrenees), the landscape is characterised by stunning gorges, limestone pinnacles and smooth canyons carved from the soft local rock. A range of possible accommodation based in the village of Puyarruego, where camping, bungalows and gites are available (prices are based on full-board bungalow accommodation).

Fitness and training
To get the most out of your canyoning holiday you should be reasonably fit and active. You should not need any specific training but you will enjoy canyoning more if you take some regular exercise before your trip. Some of the canyons require a reasonably long walk-in with some uphill climbing, and you may like to offer to share the portage of ropes and equipment with your guide. No previous experience of canyoning or abseiling is necessary, but you should have a good head for heights and be able to swim confidently.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Flights to Pau airport, transfer to Bareges. Free afternoon - take a walk to the lovely Creperie at St. Justin, or simply relax with a cold beer on our patio.
Day 2:Introduction to canyoning. We visit one of the local canyons near Gavarnie.
Day 3:A second French canyon - something a bit more challenging, looking at the techniques of abseiling.
Day 4:Morning transfer to Spain. Afternoon walk discovering the spectacular canyons and gorges.
Day 5:Introduction to the canyons of the Sierra de Guara.
Day 6:A typical Spanish canyon - smooth, rounded rocks, huge abseils and stunning views. Plus the water is warm!
Day 7:A final day of canyoning - our most technical canyon yet, and one of the classic descents of the Sierra de Guara.
Day 8:Depart for the airport in the morning.
travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.
how this holiday makes a difference
We are a small business based in the high mountain village of Bareges in the Haute Pyrenees. Bareges is a traditional thermal spa village, nestling just on the edge of the Neouvielle Nature Reserve and the Pyrenees National Park. In the steep-sided valleys of the Pyrenees, rushing glacial waters have carved deep, sculpted canyons. Experience the adrenaline rush of descending these hidden canyons, whilst also discovering how the mountains work. Our aim is to provide active holidays and promote awareness of the mountain environment (geology and geography, flora and fauna), to support the local people and community (history, culture, language and traditional way of life) and allow you to discover the beauty of the Pyrenees without upsetting their delicate natural balance.

We practice a “tread lightly” policy in the mountains. Canyoning relies on the natural energy source of gravity – walking, swimming, sliding, jumping and abseiling - we visit some wild and beautiful places, but leave no trace of our passing. Group sizes are small – between two and eight people – to minimise our impact on the fragile mountain environment, and maximise the enjoyment for our clients.

Although our canyoning trips require some short journeys by road, we have a single company minibus and offer transfers to reduce the need for guests to hire multiple vehicles at the airport. We promote travel to the Pyrenees by public transport (Eurostar to Paris, TGV train to Lourdes, local bus service to Bareges). Alternatively, guests can bring their own car on the ferry to Spain, thus avoiding short haul flights. Virtually all of our business is conducted over the internet, and we cut down on paper-consumption and airmail miles by posting all of our information on our website and communicating with our customers by email.

The French section of our canyoning holiday is based from our traditional house in a high mountain village. We spent two years restoring the house to its former glory, maintaining the original features and using local craftsmen whilst taking steps to improve the energy-efficiency of the house. Our work has encouraged a general "facelift" of the village. The house is now gas centrally-heated, by a very efficient, modern, on-demand boiler. Heating is supplemented with a wood-stove burning wood from managed, sustainable forest (with zero carbon debt). We encourage our guests to close their shutters at night to conserve heating energy. The roof and all exterior walls are fully-insulated. Washrooms are fitted with showers rather than baths, and the toilets have an eco-flush option to reduce water consumption. We use eco-friendly A-rated appliances, wash our own bedding and line-dry our linen outside in the mountain air whenever possible. Around half of our household waste is recycled, including glass bottles, tins and cans, paper/cardboard and plastic bottles.

We live and work in the Pyrenees year round and operate as a French company, paying local taxes and using local activity guides, instructors, craftsmen and tradesmen. In opening up the British market, and promoting the area through the internet, we hope to bring much-needed custom to the people of the Pyrenees and to strengthen the village communities. In the second part of the canyoning holiday, we visit the Sierra de Guara region of the Spanish Pyrenees, where we experience a totally different scenery, culture and way of life. Running a two-centre holiday allows us to contribute to the economy of a second isolated mountain community, as well as promoting awareness, and discovering the local specialities of the other side of the border!

Throughout the holiday guests are encouraged to shop in the mountain villages and support small traders. For the first part of the trip, all of our food is home-cooked with a French theme and including seasonal vegetables and locally-produced meats purchased from our village butcher – Monsieur Sabathie. Specialities include the Bareges-Gavarnie AOC lamb which never leaves our valley, delicious dry-cured mountain sausages, hams and pates. We introduce our guests to local honey, mountain sheeps' cheeses, confit duck and Tarbais beans produced in the SW of France. Locally-produced goods can be purchased at the village market on Wednesdays, or direct from the producers on open farm visits. The house bar is stocked with local wines and spirits, and guests are encouraged to try local dishes at a mountain restaurant on our night off.

For the Spanish section of the trip, we eat out at local restaurants and stay in comfortable bungalows on a small, family-run campsite at the edge of the National Park. Here typical local dishes might include hearty broths and stews, cured sausages and hams, or fresh salads. Mountain food is simple but delicious.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
