About Rio
Situated on Brazil’s south east coast, Rio de Janeiro is one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Set in the sweeping curves of Guanabara bay, fringed by miles of golden beaches, and with rainforest and mountains within the city limits, its natural beauties are breathtaking. Portuguese speaking and with over 6 million inhabitants, Rio holds both a huge diversity of economic and social levels, and a rich musical and cultural heritage. From the bars and clubs of Lapa to the sound systems in the favelas and singing on the streets, music is everywhere. A live-for-today attitude is a part of the national character and ‘Cariocas’ (Rio residents, passionately proud of their city) definitely know how to party.
Dance
Our dance classes are taught by a locally based, internationally acclaimed teacher and his team. A member since childhood of some of Rio´s most illustrious Samba schools (Beija-Flor, Portela, Salgueiro), Marinho Bras is also a world leading Forró instructor, responsible for creating the style Forró Pé de Serra, now the most popular style of Forró danced in Rio and the South East of the country. All dance lessons take place in a beautiful air-conditioned local dance academy. We are proud to be working with his fantastic teaching team, who will have beginners and experienced dancers alike surpassing themselves. During dance lessons you will have an individual Brazilian dance partner.
Project
A project can be a hugely rewarding part of your holiday which gives you a unique connection to your holiday destination. In order for the lives of people living in favelas (Brazilian shantytowns) to improve, the perception of their neighbourhoods must improve. Our project is to paint an entire hillside favela so that it becomes a huge colourful image visible from prominent places in the city including the Sugar Loaf and the Cristo. The first stage is taking place in Morro de Prazeres, a favela on the hillside above Santa Teresa. It has the support of children, youngsters and adults that live in the community.
Accommodation
You will be staying in Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro. Santa Teresa is a unique place. With its cobbled streets, colonial mansions and the old fashioned ‘Bonde’ tram, it appears to have stopped in time. Our accommodation is in a combination of boutique guesthouses and family homes.
Activities
All the above visits and activities are included in the price. However, there are many great activities ranging from hiking trips in the rainforest to paragliding from the mountains down to the beach or a helicopter ride which you may wish to take part in while you are there. The itinerary below is a sample only and may vary.

This type of trip is ideal for people who are unable to take very long periods off work but who are interested in volunteering to work with communities in need, or in wildlife conservation. These shorter trips combine volunteering with an opportunity to see the main sights in destinations. Find out more about 'taste of volunteering'how this holiday makes a difference

On this holiday you get to personally take part in a social project that makes a difference to your destination instantly but also on a greater scale. As you take part in the 'Make Favela Art' social project, you will be helping to paint the houses in one of Rio's poorest areas, making a big difference to the lives of the residents, many of whom cannot do this work for themselves due to illness or age.
Not only will you be helping make the favela a nicer place to live by improving the residents' daily environment, you will also be helping to realise the larger goals of the project: this is more than just painting and decorating, as the aim of the project is to paint all 15,000 houses in Prazeres, a favela visible from many prominent parts of Rio, in order to transform it into a huge brightly coloured landmark, part of a scheme to challenge and overturn the negative perceptions and stereotypes associated with the favelas and their residents, a vital part of improving the lives of those at the bottom of society. We believe in making a difference, both to lives of our clients through an inspirational experience of Brazil but also to the destination. We do in the following ways. Basing our holidays in a designated sustainable tourism area, where tourism is accommodated using the existing infrastructure (no high rise hotels or fast food chains) and is managed to ensure it has minimal environmental and social impact. Providing 25% of the running costs of a local social project that offers out of school educational and recreational activities for children and teenagers in a local Rio favela. During the holiday, we will take you to visit the social project, an opportunity to see where some of the money from your holiday is going, to interact with the children in the project and see the positive impact the project is having in their lives. Carefully choosing suppliers who work in a socially responsible way: for instance, the dance school in which you will be taking lessons also runs free dance classes for young people from local disadvantaged communities, and the Capoeira school that we use is run as a social enterprise, using the revenue from customers like us to fund Capoeira education for young people who cannot afford to pay for the lessons. Choosing and recommending local service providers to ensure the money we use goes back to the local community. We use a bed and breakfast network for our accommodation which not only provides a valuable source of income to the local host families but is also run as a social enterprise, providing training in the principles of sustainable tourism to local ancillary service providers (waiters, bar, restaurant and shop owners, taxi and cable car drivers). We also use a local transport cooperative to provide our transport and recommend excellent local bars and restaurants and hiking guides. Giving our clients a full briefing on the economic and social realities of the country in which they are staying, plus advising on appropriate behaviour, and providing a complimentary Portuguese lesson to enhance communication with local people. Offsetting carbon emissions: we work with Climate Care to offset the Carbon emissions caused by our business and all the flights we take. We add the price of the carbon offsetting for our clients’ flights to the invoice as an optional additional charge. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
