day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | You arrive at the lowland forests of Thattekkad, set on the banks of the Periyar river where you will check into the Hornbill Camp. Check out and fit out the cycles for the tough challenge ahead. Later, we will take a quick ride to Edmalayar in the nearby forests along the mountain tracks to get acclimatized to the terrain and climate for the days ahead. |
| Day 2: | Early morning we commence our ride for the first big challenge – riding from 300’ to above 3600’. We ride along the side of the river Periyar, through forests, spice plantations, countryside of pineapple plantations & rubber estates. At Neriamangalam, we will start our ride uphill through narrow mountain roads with deep chasms on its side, wilderness interspersed with lakes, spice growing villages and narrow rivulets and deep canyons, till we reach the foothills of the Western Ghats at Adimali. Our destination is a beautifully crafted Cardamom Estate Bungalow reminiscent of the holidaying of the great planters of yester year that will instantly charm you with its typical Kerala style architecture. |
| Day 3: | We will make our way to Munnar, the hill country, after breakfast. Once a favourite summer resort town of the British, the hill town of Munnar is set amidst dramatic mountain scenery: craggy peaks, tall red wood trees, and some of the world’s highest tea plantations. The terrain is undulating but the scenic beauty of the manicured tea gardens is bound to mesmerize you while you cycle towards the beautiful tea estate bungalow. |
| Day 4-5: | We will be up early and we ride through the only sandalwood forest in India and the dry deciduous forests of the wildlife sanctuary at Chinnar, with chances of sightings of wildlife roaming free. Soon we will cross the boundaries into Tamilnadu and pass through temple towns and large farmlands and bustling towns as we reach the foothills of Indira Gandhi National park – one of the most wildlife rich parks in India, a place known for its great swathes of forests and wildlife - birds, butterflies, elephants, sloth bears, leopards, gaurs (Indian Bison), dholes (wild dogs) and the king cobra. Our stay will be at a farm bungalow with plantations of coconuts, groundnuts, vanilla, gooseberry and sugarcane. We can spend a day to ride to nearby villages, meet the local people and take a round on the periphery of the park. |
| Day 6-7: | Today is the day of the greatest challenge of the entire ride – riding the 24 ‘hair-pin’ bends through the narrow mountain trail taking us into the heart of Valparai, famed for its tea and rain forests which are the last bastion for the endangered Lion Tailed Macaques. On arrival by afternoon we will settle into the luxurious tea estate bungalow and take the afternoon off to watch the macaques in their natural rain forest habitat. |
| Day 8: | We will once again ride to the lower elevations through spectacular forest patches of Sholayar, lakes and cascading rivers to the site of the greatest waterfall in Kerala at Vazhachal. We will then make a short transfer to Kochi where we end our trip. |
how this holiday makes a difference
Besides being the best way to explore the less traveled roads along the Western Ghats, mountain biking lets you meet up with the local communities, the indigenous people and a chance to understand their unique culture and lifestyles. For the muduvans & the kaadar tribes living among the upper reaches of the Western Ghats, income by being the local trackers and guides has helped them to make a decent living . Expeditions like these give an opportunity also to visit them at their villages and interact with them and gives the travelers a chance to appreciate local cultures. Such visits are factored in this cycling tour. This trip also helps in raising awareness about the unique bio-diversity of the Western Ghats which is one of the 34 bio diversity ‘Hot Spots’ of the earth. There is a heightened threat level of bio-diversity and endemism particularly of the Nilgiri Tahr at Munnar and the Lion Tailed Macaque at Valparai – the last viable surviving areas of these once abundant species. All parks in this region have Eco Development Committees and Forest Protection Teams employed in tourism related work and arranging all wildlife programmes for tourists. So when one enters the park & takes part in safaris or treks in the park, the proceeds of such activities go to the local communities directly and almost in full. The places you will be staying are small single owner properties, small holdings or eco lodges and approximately 30% of the money you will be spending for staying here goes directly to the local communities by employing them as support staff and guides for tourism related activities like visit to the tribal village, forest walks, tea estate and farm visits. On the first night you stay at Hornbill Camp which is made of locally available materials and constructed exclusively by using locally available expertise in reed leaf thatching. There is very little concrete used, instead tents are used and more importantly only maximum of 2 kva electricity is used in the camp. The water is heated using solar heaters and the kitchen refuse is recycled for use in the spice plantations nearby. As the traveling is on cycles most of the way, it enables you to take in the surroundings without damaging the environment. We always believe in small groups of maximum 6 persons to reduce impacting on the ‘carrying capacity’ of the region they are passing through, most of which are protected forests. Our strict policy of Leave No Trace helps protect the environment and is an example to the locals by removing all waste from place to place. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
